France shuts schools, Italy limits outdoor work as heatwave grips EuropeNew Foto - France shuts schools, Italy limits outdoor work as heatwave grips Europe

By Emma Pinedo PARIS/MADRID (Reuters) -Several Italian regions banned outdoor work during the hottest hours of the day, France shut scores of schools and Spain confirmed last month as its hottest June on record as a severe heatwave gripped Europe, triggering widespread health alerts. Spanish authorities were investigating whether a street sweeper's death over the weekend in Barcelona was caused by the heatwave and trade unions blamed the heat for the death on Monday of a 47-year-old man on a construction site near Bologna. Europe is the world's fastest-warming continent, heating up at twice the global average, according to the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, with extreme heatwaves occurring earlier in the year, and persisting into later months. "What is exceptional, and I would stress exceptional but not unprecedented is the time of year," said World Meteorological Organization spokesperson Clare Nullis. "We are the first of July and we are seeing episodes of extreme heat which normally we would see later on in the summer. Higher temperatures in the Mediterranean Sea tend "to reinforce the extreme temperatures over land areas," she said. The Mediterranean Sea was up to 6 degrees Celsius warmer than usual for the time of year, hitting a record of as much as 30 C (86 F) in Spain's Balearic Sea as a heat dome trapped hot air above Europe, the country's AEMET weather forecaster said. Spain recorded its hottest June last month, with an average temperature of 23.6 C, AEMET said. The Red Cross has set up an air-conditioned "climate refuge" in southern Malaga, said IFRC spokesperson Tommaso Della Longa, to help residents cope with the searing temperatures. Extreme heat kills up to 480,000 people annually around the world, according to Swiss Re, which notes this exceeds the combined toll from floods, earthquakes and hurricanes. HEALTH ALERTS The heat was set to peak in France on Tuesday, reaching 40-41 C in some areas and 36-39 C in many others, weather forecaster Meteo France said. Sixteen departments will be on the highest level of alert from noon, with 68 on the second highest. Some 1,350 schools were fully or partially closed, up from around 200 on Monday, the Education Ministry said. The top floor of the Eiffel Tower will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, with visitors advised to drink plenty of water. Italy, meanwhile, issued heatwave red alerts for 17 cities, including Milan and Rome. In Sicily, a 53-year-old woman with a heart condition died while walking in the city of Bagheria, news agencies reported, possibly of heatstroke. Scientists say greenhouse gas emissions from burning fossil fuels are a key cause of climate change, with deforestation and industrial practices being other contributing factors. Last year was the planet's hottest on record. "We keep hearing about climate change. I think we're definitely feeling it now," Omar Bah, a rental company worker said in London, where temperatures hit 32 C. "When I was younger, summer wasn't like this." Across Europe, tourists also sought ways to keep cool. "We woke up as early as possible to get out as early as possible so we can rest during the afternoon," Susana Leivonen, a 45-year-old from Finland said in Paris. The family were prepared with water and sun lotion, and planned to seek respite in shops or take an afternoon nap. The scorching temperatures have raised the risk of field fires as farmers in France, the European Union's biggest grain producer, start harvesting this year's crop, with many working through the night to avoid peak temperatures in the afternoon. Inmate fatally shoots North Carolina officer before being caught in stolen vehicle, sheriff saysNew Foto - Inmate fatally shoots North Carolina officer before being caught in stolen vehicle, sheriff says

A federal inmate escaped from custody at a medical clinic in western North Carolina and fatally shot a detention officer with his own gun Monday, then fled in a stolen vehicle before being captured in another county, a sheriff said. The inmate had been taken to an orthopedics office in Murphy for undisclosed treatment when a scuffle began. The inmate took the officer's weapon and shot him, Cherokee County Sheriff Dustin Smith said at a news conference. The inmate ran into the parking lot, jumped into a vehicle that had just arrived and took off. The inmate was later apprehended in Macon County, nearly an hour to the east, Smith said. Smith said the inmate, Kelvin Simmons, 48, will be charged with first-degree murder. The detention officer was identified as Francisco Paul Flattes, 56, a four-year employee of the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office. Smith said Flattes' wife also works for the county detention center. Another officer suffered injuries unrelated to the shooting and was recovering, the sheriff said. "This has been probably one of the worst days of my career," Smith said. Emergency personnel in Clay County had alerted Macon County deputies that the inmate was driving to their county on U.S. Route 64, authorities said. Simmons' vehicle was stopped and he was detained after a short standoff. There were no injuries at the scene. Smith said Simmons was already being held on bank robbery charges along with an October 2024 escape. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

VALERIE MACON/AFP via Getty; Jean Baptiste Lacroix/WireImage Olivia Munnopened up about her struggles with trichotillomania, which she said she first experienced while datingChris Pine. TheYour Friends & Neighborsstar has been candid about the hair-pulling disorder, which the actress said typically manifests in her picking out her eyelashes. She told Dax Shepard about the first time she started hair pulling on the most recent episode of theArmchair Expert With Dax Shepardpodcast. Munn explained that she had been dating Pine, whose star had risen after he had been cast inStar Trek.As a result, paparazzi started camping outside of his home, and Munn said they captured photos of her as she left his apartment. "I did the horrible thing which was to read the comments," she said. "At the time, you don't know that it's bad." This incident occurred after Munn attended the Stony Awards, where she dressed in a blue 1980s-style prom dress in order to make it on the "worst dressed" list. "I couldn't believe it worked," she said of her outfit. "The fact that they know who I am to even put me on this list was very exciting." Michael Tran/FilmMagic While the blue dress was intended to garner a negative reaction, Munn didn't expect people to harp on her look when she was snapped outside of Pine's apartment. She said people especially picked on a wallet clutch she had been holding. The experience started her trichotillomania, she said. Trichotillomania can sometimes be triggered by anxiety or stress, according to theMayo Clinic. Munn shared more about how it feels when she pulls her hair out. "I'll feel like, 'Oh, this eyelash feels like it's gonna come out,' even though it's not," she said. "And then when you pull it, there's a quick second of pain, and then there's a satisfaction, and then immediate regret." While Pine and Munn split years ago, the two remain friends. Munn, who marriedJohn Mulaneyin 2024, said she caught up with the actor afterSNL50and said he was "the best." Israeli strike on cafe near Gaza City port kills dozens, hospital official saysNew Foto - Israeli strike on cafe near Gaza City port kills dozens, hospital official says

More than 40 people have been killed in an Israeli airstrike that hit a cafe near the port in Gaza City, according to the head of the territory's largest hospital. Dr. Mohammad Abu Silmiya, the director of Al-Shifa hospital, said in an update on Monday night that at least 41 people had been killed and 75 injured in the strike. Videos geolocated by CNN show thick smoke rising from the scene as well as widespread damage to the cafe and the surrounding area. They also showed bodies being removed on stretchers. The Israel Defense Forces told CNN that the incident is "under review." In response to questions about the strike, the IDF said, "Earlier today (Monday), the IDF struck several Hamas terrorists in the northern Gaza Strip. Prior to the strike, steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians using aerial surveillance." The Al-Baqa cafe was a well-known spot for students, journalists and remote workers, as it offered internet and a place to work by the Mediterranean coast. Silmiya told CNN that "most of the casualties are women and children," including many students who were at the cafe for internet access. He also said the hospital was short of ICU beds and anesthetics to treat the casualties. The death toll increased Monday night after some people died from their injuries. "We are treating the injured on the hospital floor as no rooms and hospital beds are available," the hospital director added. Among those killed was a freelance journalist, Ismail Abu Hatab, according to other journalists at the scene. The Hamas-controlled Government Media Office said his death brought to 228 the number of journalists killed by Israeli military action in Gaza since October 2023. News of the strike comes as Israeli leaders debate how to proceed with the war in Gaza ahead of an expected meeting between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump on July 7. A source familiar with the discussions told CNN Israel had yet to reach a policy decision after two consecutive days of meetings between Netanyahu and his most senior advisers and ministers. However, the source said Netanyahu is interested in a ceasefire deal. Trump has openly pushed for an end to the war in Gaza, saying on Friday a ceasefire will be agreed to "within a week." The small group of Israel's most senior government officials includes far-right ministers like Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, who have both loudly advocated for an intensification of the bombardment of Gaza, and other officials like Aryeh Deri, who favor a comprehensive hostage deal that would bring about the end of the war. Ben Gvir, head of the Jewish Power party, insisted that a "decisive move" must be made in Gaza and expressed frustration that Israel was wasting time and opportunities with each passing day, the source said. Netanyahu is trying to reach a decision before his trip to Washington, DC, to meet Trump, the source said, adding that they may have to come to a decision this week. On Sunday, Netanyahu said "many opportunities have opened up" following Israel's military operations in Iran, including the possibility of bringing home the remaining hostages held in Gaza. CNN's Tim Lister and Dana Karni contributed to this report. This story has been updated with additional developments. For more CNN news and newsletters create an account atCNN.com

Militants in Pakistan storm a police station and set fire to banks, killing a boyNew Foto - Militants in Pakistan storm a police station and set fire to banks, killing a boy

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) — Dozens of militants armed with guns and rockets stormed a police station and set fire to two banks in restive southwestern Pakistan on Tuesday, killing a boy and wounding nine others before fleeing, officials said. The boy died when the attackers fired on civilians indiscriminately during the attacks in Mastung, a district in Balochistan province, said Jan Mohammad, a local government administrator. Mohammad said some of the insurgents were also killed in the shootout with security forces. A provincial government spokesman, Shahid Rind, said a security operation had been launched to pursue the assailants. No group immediately claimed responsibility, though suspicion is likely to fall on the outlawed Baloch Liberation Army, or BLA, which often targets security forces and civilians in Balochistan and elsewhere. The United States designated the BLA a terrorist organization in 2019. Balochistan has long been the scene of a low-level insurgency by separatist groups seeking independence from the central government. The province is also home to militants linked to the Pakistani Taliban and the Islamic State group.

Prince William Marks Princess Diana's 64th Birthday by Taking on One of Her Biggest Causes Head-OnNew Foto - Prince William Marks Princess Diana's 64th Birthday by Taking on One of Her Biggest Causes Head-On

Dominic Lipinski/Getty On Tuesday, July 1, Prince William marked the two-year milestone of his homelessness initiative, Homewards. The visit coincided with what would have been the 64th birthday of his late mother, Princess Diana — whose compassion inspired his commitment. William's mission: to make homelessness "rare, brief, and unrepeated" On what would have beenPrincess Diana's 64th birthday,Prince Williamis honoring her legacy in a powerful way. The Prince of Wales, 43, spent Tuesday, July 1, in Sheffield celebrating the two-year anniversary ofHomewards— his ambitious initiative to help end homelessness, a cause that was also close to his late mother's heart. At the Homewards: Delivering Change Together event, William met with representatives from the six pilot regions — Sheffield, Newport, Aberdeen, Northern Ireland, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole, and Lambeth — who are leading innovative, locally driven efforts to tackle homelessness. The daylong gathering featured workshops, expert panels and the chance for teams on the frontlines to share ideas and strategies as they work to create lasting change across the U.K. Dominic Lipinski/Getty He also joined former U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown and Homewardsadvocate Steven Bartlett for a panel discussion. Brown founded Multibank — a key Homewards partner — which connects businesses with surplus goods, like toiletries, baby supplies and bedding, to charities and social workers who distribute them to families in need. Later, William met with individuals who have experienced homelessness firsthand and are now helping to shape the evolving direction of Homewards, bringing vital insight and lived experience to the initiative. Homewards, as Prince William puts it,aims to make homelessness "rare, brief and unrepeated."His commitment to the cause is deeply personal — shaped by the example of his late mother, Princess Diana, who brought him and his brotherPrince Harry, 40, to shelters and charity centers from a young age. In 2005, shortly after graduating from the University of St. Andrews, William became a patron ofCentrepoint, one of the homeless charities Diana had long supported. In 2009, he spent a night sleeping rough on the streets of London to deepen his understanding of the issue. He later added another of his mother's causes,The Passage, to his roster of patronages — continuing her legacy through action. Dominic Lipinski/Getty For the second part of his morning in Sheffield, Prince William visited Meadowhead Secondary School, where a pioneering early intervention program called Upstream is being piloted. The initiative uses a student survey to identify young people at greater risk of homelessness and connect them — and their families — with the support they need. Modeled on a successful Australian program, Upstream aims to address the root causes of homelessness before they take hold. Ahead of his visit to Sheffield, Prince William released an open letter to the six participating program areas, praising their progress and noting that the initiative is now firmly in "delivery mode" as it approaches the end of its second year. "Your experiences are what makes Homewards unique and powerful," William wrote. "We have the ability to harness our collective capabilities, expertise, and resources towards this common cause. I am immensely proud to say that your collective effort has already allowed us to achieve lasting impact." "I am confident we can lead and inspire understanding, empathy and optimism that homelessness can be ended," he continued. "Focus is also important, and you have identified the groups particularly at risk of homelessness in your locations to drive solutions that show it is possible to prevent their homelessness." Assessing Homewards' progress, Lydia Stazen — former Executive Director of the Institute of Global Homelessness and a member of the Homewards National Expert Panel — said, "The networks have been built, the foundations have been laid and we are seeing really concrete outcomes." She adds that the initiative came at exactly the right time for the sector, after the disruption caused by the COVID pandemic. "Homewards was perfectly timed to bring in that fresh energy and bring in some new partners and resources, which was so desperately needed at that point." "I think it is why Homewards has been able to get where it's got in two years because there is that excitement and leadership — and that comes [in the Prince's case] from a really heartfelt place," she says.
