Judy Greer is sharing why she felt a personal connection to The Last Thing He Told Me's storyline.

The actress, 50, joined the Apple TV thriller for its second season, which premiered on Friday, Feb. 20, as Quinn. Quinn was best friends with the late mother of Angourie Rice's Bailey.

Greer tells PEOPLE that before joining the show, which is based on Laura Dave's bestselling novel of the same name, she was already a fan.

"I devoured the book before they even started shooting because Jen told me that this was a project that she was going to be doing," she explains, referring to her longtime friend Jennifer Garner, who stars in the series as Hannah Hall and serves as an executive producer. "Of course, when the show came out, I watched it, because I love the book and I love Jen playing this role."

"I think it's such a great, interesting, strong female character," Greer adds. "I know that I could never be like Hannah Hall. She's a lot tougher than me, but I like to pretend that I could."

In season 1, Hannah's husband Owen (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) goes on the run, leaving her to protect his daughter Bailey, whose biological mother died when she was young.

Despite their initial rocky relationship, Hannah and Bailey return for season 2 — which adapts Dave's sequel, The First Time I Saw Him, and picks up five years later — with a deep, motherly bond. Then Quinn comes into the picture when Bailey reaches out in an effort to learn more about her birth mom, causing some tension between Quinn and Hannah as they navigate their roles in Bailey's life.

"I'm a stepmom, and I was very into the whole plotline of the stepmom caring for her stepdaughter in that way," says Greer, who is the stepmom of husband Dean E. Johnsen's adult kids Lucas and Emilee. "I mean, thankfully my stepdaughter didn't lose her mother, so she didn't have to go through that, but I'm like a real sucker for a stepmom story."

Greer's understanding of that relationship only strengthened her ability to understand the dynamic Hannah and Bailey have with Quinn, who Greer says she otherwise doesn't have much in common with.

"Quinn is so layered, and she's so guarded," she says. "That was really fun because I am a very open person, and I wear my heart on my sleeve. So to play someone that constantly I had to make sure that she was guarding herself, that she wasn't letting herself fall too hard for Bailey or for Hannah or to get sucked into this whole situation, that was really interesting for me."

"I talked about it a lot in therapy," Greer jokes.

Despite the on-screen drama, Greer adds that working with Garner, whom she starred alongside as frenemies in the 2004 romcom 13 Going on 30, brought so much joy to the experience.

"It's the best to get paid to hang out with your friend, that's for sure," she says. "It's funny that we keep playing characters that are at odds with each other, too. I wonder what it would be like to work with her when we were like the best of friends and really into each other. We always joke about that."

Greer continues: "Then we would never have to get separated on set — because there were times where we had to stay away from each other, especially with some of those dramatic scenes that we had together. I would be like, 'Stay away. You are a stone. You are a ghost. I need to be not around you until we're done shooting this moment.'"
