By Colleen Goko and Kopano Gumbi JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) -Another no-show by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Donald Trump's tariff threats and rising tensions between Washington and BRICS countries all look set to overshadow this week's meeting of G20 finance chiefs in Durban, South Africa. Several key officials including Bessent skipped February's Cape Town gathering of finance ministers and central banks in the grouping, already raising questions about its ability to tackle pressing global challenges. "I think it's problematic not to have the world's largest economy represented at the table, at least at a senior political level," said Josh Lipsky, chair of international economics at the Atlantic Council. "It raises questions about the G20's long-term viability," said Lipsky, adding that Bessent's absence foreshadowed U.S. plans for a slimmed-down, "back to basics" G20 when it assumes the grouping's rotating presidency next year. Trump has implemented a baseline 10% tariff on all U.S. imports, with punitive rates targeting specific countries and products - including steel and aluminum at 50%, autos at 25%, and threatened levies of up to 200% on pharmaceuticals. Extra tariffs on 25 countries are set to take effect on August 1. His threat to impose further tariffs on BRICS countries adds complexity, given that eight G20 members - including host South Africa - belong to the expanded BRICS grouping. The overlap hints at the emergence of competing forums as Western-led institutions face credibility challenges. "Policy uncertainty is the biggest theme at this point in time," South African Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Fundi Tshazibana told Reuters. The G20 has its origins in past crisis fire-fighting and really took off as countries around the world saw a need to coordinate policies to emerge from the global financial crisis of the late 2000s. "The G20 was built around a presumption that all the world's major economies shared a common interest in a stable, relatively open global economy," said Brad Setser of the Council on Foreign Relations. "But Trump doesn't really care about stability and wants a more closed global economy." 'DIFFICULT SPACE' The Durban gathering of finance chiefs on Thursday and Friday also unfolds against a backdrop of mounting economic pressures, particularly for African economies. Sub-Saharan Africa's external debt has ballooned to $800 billion, or 45% of GDP, according to Goldman Sachs, while traditional funding sources are drying up. Chinese lending has slowed to a trickle after years of expansion, leaving an $80 billion financing gap. "The views that they've expressed are if you negotiate them down before taking the loan, they will go with that," said Trevor Manuel, the former finance minister of South Africa who is leading the Africa Expert Panel of the G20. "But once the loan is made, then they expect a return, and that is embedded in their legislation. So that is one issue that needs a lot of attention," he said. China's Belt and Road Initiative has brought very significant resources to the African continent, "but there are also the offsets," said Manuel. "I think that part of the push going forward is greater transparency, which means that some of the barter arrangements and so on need to be dealt with quite differently." Meanwhile, U.S. and European grants - accounting for 25% of the region's external financing - face cuts as Washington suspends foreign aid and European capitals redirect funds towards defence. "Africa is in a difficult space," said Lumkile Mondi, political commentator at the University of Witwatersrand. "Investment in the continent is going to dwindle because of high levels of indebtedness and low GDP growth, making it less relevant in the current geoeconomics." When it assumed the G20 presidency in December under the motto "Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability", Pretoria had hoped to use the platform to pressure rich countries on climate finance and address the distrust between the global North and South. Instead, it finds itself managing the fallout from aid cuts and tariff wars that directly undermine those goals. As the continent's most developed economy, South Africa faces pressure to champion African interests while navigating great power rivalries. The National Treasury said it was "premature to comment" on specific goals for the gathering, however. Director General of Treasury Duncan Pieterse said in a statement on Monday that they hoped to issue the first Communique under the South African G20 presidency at the end of the meetings. On Monday the G20's financial stability watchdog delivered a new plan on how to tackle climate risks but paused policy work amid a U.S. retreat that has tested efforts to advance a united financial policy on climate-related risks. The U.S. has withdrawn from multiple groups dedicated to exploring how flooding and wildfires and big climate-related policy shifts could impact financial stability. MANRESA, Spain (AP) — Josep Lluís Iriberri helps celebrateMass at a mountaintop basilica, swaps his priest's robe for a hiking backpack and rallies his latest group of pilgrims literally following him in the footsteps of the 16th-century St. Ignatius. Iriberri is the do-it-all Jesuit who designed the pilgrimage route to honor the founder of the Society of Jesus and for over a decade has almost single-handedly kept it alive. Since 2012, when Iriberri started the Camino Ignaciano (Ignatian Way) at the orders of his Jesuit superiors in Barcelona, this 65-year-old Spaniard spends six months a year guiding pilgrims along the trail that recreates the life-changing journey Ignatius made over 500 years ago. "The Camino Ignaciano is putting flesh on the bones of Ignatius," Iriberri said recently while an Associated Press journalist accompanied him and about 20 teachers from Jesuit schools in the United States on the final day of their pilgrimage. At one point on the 13-kilometer (8-mile) hike as the path dips from a village through some woods, Iriberri stops the group to tell them that Ignatius — or his mule — surely stepped on the very stones they stood on, making them natural "relics" of the saint. "We all know the history of Ignatius, because we have read about it, but being here, walking here, is what let's you feel like you know Ignatius. He now has a body for me," Iriberri says. True to the Jesuit tradition of being active in the world, Iriberri stays busy problem-solving. Nothing is too transcendent or too mundane for him to tackle. Besides celebrating Mass and dishing out historical and spiritual knowledge about Ignatius, he often carries a can of spray paint to touch up the hundreds of orange arrows he left on rocks and sign posts to mark the way. He even pitches in helping a server with orders at a bar that served as a refueling post. "From rising in the morning until going to bed, I take care of everything," said Iriberri, walking briskly through the sunbaked countryside. "He's so knowledgeable and so deep. But also just like a fun person to be around," said pilgrim Amanda Murphy. "I feel like he's always got a tidbit to surprise you or help you learn more." Following Ignatius' transformational journey Iriberri had worked for the Jesuits Refugee Service in Morocco and had walked Spain's popularCamino de Santiago, or St. James' Way, six times when he was assigned the gargantuan task of creating from scratch a Camino Ignaciano. The idea was to try to mimic some of the success of the Camino de Santiago, which drew nearly half a million walkers last year. Walking the nearly 600-km (370-mile) Camino Ignaciano can take a month, broken into 27 stages by Iriberri. Most pilgrims, like the teachers from the U.S., do a shorter version in just over a week that combines bus rides with daily walks. Iriberri charted the route along public footpaths, including some stretches of theCamino de Santiagoin the opposite direction, to reconstruct the journey Ignatius made in 1522 from his hometown of Loyola in northern Spain to northeastern Manresa, about an hour from the Mediterranean coast. That journey was part of a profound religious transformation of Íñigo the man-of-arms into Ignatius the man-of-God who would go on to found one of the most influential Catholic orders. The Society of Jesus today has over 14,000 members around the world and has left an indelible imprint on modern education and humanistic thought. The latePope Francis was the first Jesuitto head the Holy See. Christian Zombek is a 29-year-old Jesuit in formation who teaches in Washington, D.C. He said he would never forget his week in Spain. "It just moves me to gratitude and honestly to tears to be able to pray in front of the same statues, pray the same churches that Ignatius was at, and recognize a man who's done so much for me and helped me to grow in our relationship," he said. "Now I can see how God did it with him." The culmination of the pilgrimage is the cave in Manresa where Ignatius meditated and found inspiration for the Spiritual Exercises, a central tract of Catholic how-to spirituality. To enhance the pilgrim experience, Iriberri wrote a guidebook for the Camino Ignaciano. Besides practical information, it recommends daily spiritual exercises drawn from Ignatius' foundational text. They include meditations on Ignatius' teachings, on Christ and on the pilgrim's own life and relation to God. "When you go on a pilgrimage, it is difficult to find an internal guide. You have external guides, the signposts, the route markings, but nothing to help you internally," Iriberri said. "And that is what the Camino Ignaciano is, it is an internal pilgrimage." The pilgrimage faces an uncertain future Iriberri received a boost last month when the Vatican's Dicastery for Culture and Education granted him patronage for the pilgrim path. That recognition could potentially increase awareness of the path, but it doesn't come with any financial support. Almost 4,000 registered pilgrims have completed the trail since its creation, with around 400 people doing it each of the last six years — with the exception of 2021 and 2022 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many were personally guided by Iriberri, who this year plans to lead nine groups of pilgrims. Iriberri admits that those numbers are not enough to reach the needed "critical mass" whereby the path can survive without his stewardship. He says more help is needed from local authorities to promote it as well as more hostels for pilgrims on some of the more isolated stages to ensure his work doesn't end up a quixotic quest. Pilgrim Dawn Kelly, a retired teacher from Houston, says the route is "very specific" for those interested in Ignatius and the Jesuit tradition. "You have to be into wanting to know about Ignatius," Kelly says, even though Iriberri insists that it is open to people of all faiths and even avid hikers seeking an alternative to the sometimes crowded Camino de Santiago. Fortunately for the Camino Ignaciano, Iriberri is going strong even at retirement age. He already has three pilgrimages lined up for next year and has open dates for more. Wiry, with a graying, trimmed beard, he swings his walking stick at the front to set the pace, or stays behind his pilgrims on climbs like a shepherd worried he'll lose a stray. He exhorts the American pilgrims in fluent English to keep their feet moving when the going gets tough. The discomfort, after all, deepens the experience, he teaches. "The idea is to bring the head, the heart and the body together," Iriberri said. "The sweat, the foot pain, the blisters, the hunger, they help you understand little by little that ultimately it doesn't all depend on you. The exchange is just one scene in an absurdist show, "Trump, The Twins President," thatparodies recent political eventsin a modern twist on traditional Cantonese opera, a Chinese art form dating back hundreds of years. The group behind the production originally debuted its first Trump-themed show in 2019 about the president's first term, but it has since had several iterations. Its latest reprise features not only the heated exchange with Zelensky, but also Trump'sassassination attemptin Pennsylvania last summer and references to a lot of his headline-making moves. It alludes to Trump his attacks on Harvard and his turbulent relationship with tech billionaire Elon Musk. Performed to sold-out crowds, the three-and-a-half hour show begins with a dream by Trump's daughter, Ivanka, in which her father has a fictional twin brother living in China named Chuan Pu, a transliteration in Mandarin Chinese of the name "Trump." Chuan makes his way to the United States, where Trump is campaigning for reelection. When Trump is abducted by aliens from Mars, Ivanka asks Chuan to pretend to be him to keep the nation together amid a trade war with China. Cantonese opera composer Edward Li Kui-Ming, who wrote the show, says he chose the president because of his influence internationally. "(It) is a comedy reflecting how people are being influenced by President Donald Trump. He is really (influential). And that makes me want to do…a drama related to him," Li, a fengshui master by trade, told CNN from backstage. UNESCO recognizes Cantonese opera as an "intangible cultural heritage of humanity." With a history dating back to five centuries ago, the performing art is known for its distinctive make-up, traditional costumes and classic storylines. It was an indispensable form of entertainment between the 1950s and '60s, but in recent decades, Cantonese opera has struggled to lure younger audiences. Li and his crew are on a mission to change that, using the Trump presidency to make it more relevant for younger viewers. "I have to use a new hero or new people, put it into the old drama and make it special and make it new," Li said, explaining why he picked the 47th US president. The show also uses contemporary elements. For example, veteran actor Loong Koon-tin transforms into Trump by donning a blond wig and eyebrows, a technique more akin to modern theater. Traditional makeup routines typically require actors to paint their faces red and white and spend time dressing in elaborate costumes and flashy headpieces. Loong said he worked hard on getting Trump's facial expressions and gestures right. "Every time I submerge myself in the role. I am the Donald Trump," he told CNN. Other characters like former Presidents Abraham Lincoln and Richard Nixon, as well as China's Mao Zedong and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, all have a part to play at various junctures of this fictional timeline Drawing a line between acceptable humor and offensiveness was tricky, Li said, adding that he tried to present a balanced view so that everyone could relate to the show. "I'm not trying to do anything to arouse any political items," he said. "My starting point is love and peace. I think everybody will love love and peace." The son of a former prominent Hollywood agent who was accused ofdismembering his wifeand her parents was found dead from an apparent suicide at a Los Angeles jail, officials said, just days before he was expected to appear in court. Samuel Bond Haskell Jr., 37, was arrested on suspicion of murder in November 2023 after a torso was found in a trash bag, the Los Angeles Police Department said at the time. Authorities accused Haskell of killing and dismembering his wife, Mei Li Haskell, 37; her mother, Yanxiang Wang, 64; and her stepfather, Gaoshan Li, 71, in a Tarzana, California, home they all shared. Haskell, who was the son of former talent agent and film producer Sam Haskell III, was found dead at the Twin Towers Correction Facility in Los Angeles on July 12, according to anews alertfrom the county sheriff's department. The agency reported at about 4:20 a.m. local time that detectives responded to the facility to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of Haskell. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman confirmed Haskell's death on July 14. The district attorney said Haskell was found dead by suicide in his jail cell. Haskell was charged with three counts of murder as well as the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office. He was facing life in prison without the possibility of parole for his crimes and was scheduled to appear in court on July 14 for a preliminary hearing. "Instead of standing before a judge and answering for the crimes he's been charged with, the defendant managed to escape justice," Hochman said in a statement. "This is one last cruel act by someone who did the most horrific things for reasons we will never entirely know. A family that has been dealing with unimaginable loss now has been robbed of their chance to face him, hold him accountable for his barbaric actions, and openly share their grief and their cherished memories of their loved ones." Pennsylvania murder trial:Man's parents tried to get him help. Then he beheaded his father, prosecutors say Prosecutors said they had been preparing to present evidence for the hearing that Haskell had "brutally" murdered his wife and in-laws at their Tarzana home on or around Nov. 6, 2023. Tarzana is an affluent, suburban neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles. The next day, Haskell hired and paid $500 to several day laborers to remove heavy black plastic trash bags from the residence, according to the district attorney's office. After Haskell drove away from the home, prosecutors said the workers opened one of the bags and discovered human body parts, which prompted them to return the bags and money. The workers also took pictures of Haskell, the bags, and the front of the residence before alerting police, prosecutors added. But when police responded to the home to conduct a welfare check, prosecutors said no one was at the residence, and the bags were gone. That same afternoon, Haskell was captured on surveillance footage driving into a parking lot, removing a large trash bag from the trunk of his Tesla, and disposing of the bag into a dumpster in the nearby neighborhood of Encino before leaving, according to prosecutors. Haskell was then seen again on surveillance footage transferring other trash bags from his Tesla to an SUV that he rented on November 3, prosecutors said. He left the Tesla, which was registered under his wife's name, parked on the street. Police later recovered the vehicle at the location and discovered that since the killings, Haskell had been staying with his children at an Airbnb in Tarzana, according to prosecutors. Investigators determined that he had rented the Airbnb in October for some time between Nov. 6 to Nov. 18, 2023. On the following day, prosecutors said a person rummaging through the dumpster in Encino found a beheaded torso inside a trash bag, which authorities later identified as the remains of Haskell's wife. That person called 911 to report the discovery, and Haskell was arrested the same day while driving his rental vehicle. Cartel turf war:20 bodies, some decapitated, found in Mexico At the time of his arrest, prosecutors said Haskell had been armed with a folding knife, and police discovered a Home Depot receipt in his wallet that was dated Oct. 20, 2023, for the purchase of plywood, canopy, moisture barrier, coveralls, and diamond-saw blades. Police also found a loaded .357 revolver, 32 rounds of ammunition, a blood-encrusted military-style knife, a headlamp and firearm sight, and passports for himself, his wife, and their three children, according to prosecutors. The blood on the knife matched the DNA of all three victims, and blood stains on the firearm matched Mei Li Haskell and Li. Also on November 8, prosecutors said investigators discovered eight trash bags containing bloody bedding, towels, a large machine saw, diamond-saw blades, a machete, a plywood board covered in blood, disposable gloves, and canes belonging to Wang and Li in the garage and backyard of the family's home. "Forensic testing revealed that large amounts of blood evidence had been cleaned up throughout the home," according to the district attorney's office. "Subsequent DNA testing of blood found on some of the items, including the saw, machete, and plywood board, as well as areas inside the residence, matched the DNA of all three victims." The bodies of Wang and Li have not been found, according to prosecutors. After examining Haskell's cell phone, prosecutors said police learned that Haskell had been having an affair with a 27-year-old woman whom they interviewed. Haskell allegedly told the woman in October 2023 that "his children would soon be living with his parents," according to prosecutors. Prosecutors alleged that Haskell had asked the woman to accompany him on a trip to Japan, and investigators recovered a one-way ticket to Japan purchased by Haskell on Oct. 21, 2023. He also later purchased a round-trip ticket for the woman for the period of Nov. 28 to Dec. 12, 2023. His girlfriend disappeared in 1983.He is now charged with murder. In January 2024, Haskell — who had been in custody since his arrest — pleaded not guilty to murder charges and was ordered to be held without bail,KNBC reported. His three children, who were elementary school-age at the time, were placed in protective custody in November 2023, according to the television station. KNBC reportedon July 14 that the prosecutor on the case, Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman, told a judge that she had expected Haskell to plead guilty this week. His defense attorney, Joseph Weimortz, told the television station that Haskell had been willing to waive his rights to a preliminary hearing and a jury trial to "avoid more media exposure." Weimortz noted that Haskell was afraid that the negative publicity would affect his children, according to KNBC. "In order to avoid more media exposure, he was willing to plead," Weimortz wrote in an email to the television station. "My client's acts were not acts of cowardice or lunacy. Ultimately, my client was even willing to take his own life, believing that it would end this terrible chaos."
