Severe thunderstorms are taking aim at the Midwest over the weekend, while the South is at risk of more flash flooding. Storms have already been rumbling through parts of the Midwest through Friday night, including Iowa, northern Missouri and Illinois. The widespread thunderstorms are expected to persist across much of the central U.S. this weekend, bringing a slight risk of severe weather Saturday afternoon that will affect 19 million people from eastern Michigan to northern Kentucky. Consistent rainfall is also forecast for the eastern U.S. Detroit, Indianapolis and Cincinnati are included in Saturday's risk for damaging wind gusts. Quarter-sized hail and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. At least one tornado was reported Friday afternoon in Iowa. "In addition, the plentiful moisture will lead to locally heavy downpours and the risk for isolated flash flooding both here as well as across portions of the Carolinas/Mid-Atlantic northward into Upstate New York/western New England," the National Weather Service said in an advisory on Saturday. Storms already "caused property damage and flooding" to Davenport, Iowa, on Friday night, according to a statement from the city. Local police and fire departments have been responding to the rain event and are urging residents to stay home if it is safe to do so and not drive through flooded streets. A video posted to social media showed an ominousshelf cloud, which are associated with damaging winds, in Woodhull, northwest Illinois. Meanwhile, heavy rain has returned to the Southern Plains, where parts of central Texas have already been devastated by dangerous flash flooding thatclaimed over 100 lives. This front will stall over the Southern Plains this weekend, keeping scattered thunderstorms in the forecast through Sunday across New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas. Around 17 million in this region are under flood alerts, including Dallas, San Antonio, Kerrville and Wichita Falls in Texas, Oklahoma City and Tulsa in Oklahoma, and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Rainfall totals will generally range from 1 to 5 inches, with up to 8 inches possible, through the weekend. Local burn scars, especially in Ruidoso, will be extremely vulnerable to additional flash flooding. Rainfall rates in this area could exceed 2 to 3 inches per hour. Around 14 million throughout the Western third of the country and western New York are included in heat alerts this weekend. In the West, watches stretch from parts of Washington through the Grand Canyon. Spokane, Washington; Reno, Nevada; and Bakersfield and Fresno, California, are included in these alerts, with some in effect through Monday. Highs will generally range 10 to 20 degrees above average, with temperatures maxing out in the 100s to 110s. A few weekend records will be threatened in Reno and Phoenix, and in Eugene and Medford, Oregon. Heat alerts are also in effect Saturday afternoon for parts of western New York including Syracuse and Binghamton. Temperatures are about 5 to 15 degrees above average in this region, with afternoon heat indexes topping 95 to 100 degrees. Air quality alerts are in effect Saturday afternoon for all of Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan and parts of Colorado due to wildfires. Smoke from large fires in central Canada continues to spill over the border this weekend, producing poor air quality across the Upper Midwest. Minneapolis and Duluth, Minnesota; Green Bay and Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Detroit are included in these alerts through Monday. In the Southwest, the White Sage Fire continues to burn in northern Arizona. As of the last report, it has burned about 10,973 acres and is 0% contained. Temperatures near the fire will soar into the triple digits Saturday afternoon, with breezy winds up to 25 mph. Smoke from this wildfire is pushing into parts of southwest Colorado, with air quality alerts in effect for Durango and Telluride.

Wildfires raging near the Grand Canyon's North Rim have prompted evacuations, air quality concerns andthe closure of the North Rim of the national park. TheWhite Sage Firestarted July 9 when lightning struck during a thunderstorm, according to the Bureau of Land Management. As of late July 11, it had burned 10,973 acres and was 0% contained. The fire is located 15 miles southeast of Fredonia, Arizona, and was moving toward Jacob Lake, officials said. Authorities evacuated about 500 visitors from the Grand Canyon's North Rim on July 10 in response to the fast-growing fire, the National Park Servicesaid. Evacuationswere expanded on July 11to include a vast chunk of land north of the Grand Canyon with the following boundaries: the Utah border in the north, Grand Canyon National Park in the south, House Rock Valley Road/Buffalo Ranch Road in the east, and Kaibab National Forest in the west, according to the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. The area is in "go" status, meaning all residents and visitors should leave immediately. "All visitors have left the area, and park employees and residents remain sheltering in place," the Grand Canyon NPS said. Another fire burning on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, the Dragon Bravo Fire, burned 1,500 acres and was also 0% contained. It started July 4 as the result of another lightning strike, officials said. Evacuation orders were also issued to North Rim residents in the vicinity of the Dragon Bravo fire. "The North Rim remains closed to all visitor use until further notice to support firefighting operations and ensure public safety for this fire and the nearby White Sage Fire," the National Park Service said in a July 11 statement. Smoke can be seen from the South Rim of the park, and the National Park Service urged visitors to monitor air quality conditions. Extreme fire weather was helping the White Sage Fire grow rapidly, officials said. The fire "made a significant run" the afternoon of July 10, with "erratic" winds of 15 to 20 mph and low humidity helping it spread. According to forecasters with the National Weather Service office in Flagstaff, "elevated fire danger will continue as long as hot and locally breezy conditions remain." NAGYKANIZSA, Hungary (Reuters) -Hungary's opposition leader Peter Magyar said on Saturday his Tisza party will launch a "Hungarian New Deal" to revive the stagnating economy with massive investment and predictable policy if it wins elections next year. Magyar, whose centre-right party has a firm lead over the ruling Fidesz in most opinion polls, poses the biggest political challenge to nationalist Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who after 15 years in power finds himself struggling to boost the inflation-hit economy. The risk of steep U.S. tariffs on EU imports also looms large over recovery prospects and Saturday's announcement of 30% tariffs on the EU by President Donald Trump is bad news for the Central European country. Magyar announced his Hungarian New Deal plan to supporters at his party's congress in the western city of Nagykanizsa. "We need economic growth, investments, predictable financial and economic policy in Hungary," Magyar said, adding that Tisza would crack down on corruption and buy back state assets that he said had been stolen over the past 15 years. The main pillars of Tisza's plan will be a major healthcare reform with additional funding of 500 billion forints ($1.5 billion) annually, a large-scale rental flat and home construction programme, a modernisation of state railways using EU and national funds, and investments in energy efficiency for households and in education. Magyar, a former government insider who burst into Hungarian politics last year, again pledged to unlock some 20 billion euros of suspended EU funds that Hungary has not received for years due to clashes between Brussels and Orban over a perceived erosion of democracy and corruption -- accusations that Orban denies. The parliamentary election is set to take place early next year, though no date has been set. In June parliament passed Orban's 2026 election year budget, including steep tax cuts for families, a key demographic group for Fidesz. "People are fed up with this regime. And Tisza is a kind of 'collecting party' which stood behind all this (discontent). People want change," said Edit Piroska Borsi, a retired teacher at the congress.
