As the search for signs of life inflood-stricken Texas Hill Countrycontinue, the race to save pets impacted by the devastation is on. Non-profit pet shelter Austin Pets Alive! has taken in over 230 animals primarily from shelters impacted by thefloods that began July 4. The shelter said in aJuly 6 blog updateit is coordinating a volunteer search and rescue group to find animals in impacted areas. The shelter also said it is seeking donations to provide support to families that have lost pets, including body recovery and cremation services. "It's been devastating for all living beings," Dr. Ellen Jefferson said in aJuly 6 Facebook post. "So many people are searching for their pets that are the last connection they might have to a lost family member. Pets are so intertwined in this saga and it's so important." Suzie Chase, the shelter's community affairs officer, told USA TODAY in a July 7 interview that the Austin shelter has served as a sanctuary for pets who have lost their family in the destruction the storms wrought. "We've had some cases where extended family members have asked us to foster animals because the animal's family perished in the floods," Chase said. "The extended family members just need to be able to figure out what to do next with the dogs and cats that have been located." Chase said that it is not the first time the shelter has been a part of a large-scale animal rescue, pointing to efforts following Hurricane Harvey and Winter Storm Uri. Lindsay O'Gan, the shelter's Instructional Design Manager who is in Kerrville with the rescue and reunification efforts, said in an interview with USA TODAY that the devastation in Central Texas was "hard to describe." "It happened so fast. In the same way we are seeing so much human missing and casualty ... I think the numbers are going to be much higher than we realize," O'Gan said. "Maybe 80%, 90% of the animals that are reported to us are lost, their owners are also lost or deceased." Texas flooding death toll hits 104:Hard-hit areas face new flooding risks One of the pets the shelter was able to reunify with surviving family was Superman. The medium-sized mixed breed was found in the debris and was wary of rescuers, snapping at them before they earned his trust. "His surviving family, now grieving and having lost everything, are doing everything they can to hold on to the last piece of their past that remains," theshelter wrotein the July 6 Facebook post. O'Gan noted that the staff at Kerrville Pets Alive!, where the recovery effort is based, continued their work despite connections to the unfolding tragedy. "They've lost their own family members, or they've lost their own friends, or they've just had tragedy rolling in on their phones as they are working and they would keep going," O'Gan said. "I can't imagine what it's like, that it's in their own community and they have their own losses to deal with but they just keep going." She described the moments when pets can be reunified with families as, "Christmas, New Years and birthdays all combined." "We all really absorb those moments, because they are so rare," O'Gan added. On its website,Austin Pets Alive!said its largest need is monetary donations. The shelter also said the following supplies are needed: Flea/tick meds, vaccines Airline kennels (plastic) for medium to large dogs (26" in length to 36") Potty pads Zip ties Martingale collars (medium to large) Xpens Wire crates (medium and large) Cat and dog carriers for the car Dawn dish soap Scrub pads Nitrile gloves Small bags of food Canned food (both dog and cat) Chase noted that the list on its website is updated as needs change. O'Gan added that the shelter will need supportlong after the waters recede. "There's always this outpouring of support right after a disaster that dries up and I understand that as folks move on," O'Gan said. "We're going to be working on this for the next months after the news moves on. Hopefully they'll keep us in their thoughts and keep sending those donations because they are going to be needed for the foreseeable future." ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Authorities closed the Acropolis for several hours Tuesday due to high temperatures as work restrictions remained in effect in other parts of Greece. A Culture Ministry archaeological service announced the closure between 1 p.m. — 5 p.m. (1000 GMT—1400 GMT). Mandatory work breaks were imposed in several other regions, mostly on islands and parts of central Greece, where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). The measures started Monday for outdoor workers. Those who don't comply face a 2,000 euro ($2,350) fine per worker. Authorities said the risk of wildfires, already at "very high" across the eastern mainland, is expected to increase during the week.

JUSTIN TALLIS/POOL/AFP via Getty Kate Middleton and Prince William welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte Macron, to the U.K. on July 8 to kick off their state visit The Prince and Princess of Wales will escort the couple to Windsor Castle, where King Charles and Queen Camilla will formally greet their guests Later this evening, the Macrons and royals will attend a glamorous state banquet at Windsor Castle Kate MiddletonandPrince Williamare taking on a major royal role as they start the French state visit to the U.K. The Prince and Princess of Wales, both 43, were the first members of the British royal family to welcome French PresidentEmmanuel Macronand his wife, Brigitte Macron, to the country on July 8, officially kicking off the visit. The royal couple greeted the Macrons at RAF Northolt, an airbase located in Greater London, upon their arrival in England around 11:00 a.m. local time. For the occasion, Kate wore Christian Dior for the first time — a soft blush 30 Montaigne Bar Jacket from the iconic French fashion house's 2024 collection, reimagined by creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri. The piece pays tribute to Dior's iconic 1947 "New Look," which emphasized feminine tailoring and structure. She paired it with a matching hat by Jess Collett, pearl earrings that once belonged toPrincess Dianaand a pearl necklace from the lateQueen Elizabeth's collection. By choosing to wear Dior for the first time, the Princess of Wales offered a quiet nod to France's cultural legacy — a subtle display of sartorial diplomacy. As heir to the throne, Prince William often takes on important hosting duties on behalf of his father,King Charles. Princess Kate is often by her husband's side, and they've been repeatedly tapped to welcome foreign guests to state banquets. The couple did so during the Qatar state visit in December, withKate making a rare appearance amid her cancer treatment. The royal mom of three announced in January that she was in remission butcandidly spoke about the "really difficult" phasethat comes after treatment ends during her July 2 visit to Colchester Hospital. After their greeting, the Macrons and the Prince and Princess of Wales will travel together to Windsor, where the French President and his wife will be formally welcomed by King Charles andQueen Camilla. A royal salute will be fired in the Home Park in Windsor as well as at the Tower of London. JUSTIN TALLIS/POOL/AFP via Getty President Macron, 47, and his wife, 72, will then join the King, 76, and Queen, 77, in a carriage procession through the town to Windsor Castle, where Prince William and Princess Kate will also ride in a separate horse-drawn coach. Upon their arrival in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle, there will be another royal salute and the playing of the French and British national anthems before President Macron and King Charles inspect the Guard of Honour. After the ceremony, everyone headed inside Windsor Castle for lunch in the state dining room, followed by a special exhibition of items relating to France from the Royal Collection in the Green Drawing Room. President Macron and Brigitte will travel back to London later in the afternoon to lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey before touring the church. While in London, the couple will also visit the Palace of Westminster, where Macron will address Parliamentarians in the Royal Gallery and meet Members of Parliament and Peers. The Macrons will return to Windsor Castle in the evening for a glamorous state banquet hosted by King Charles and Queen Camilla. While Buckingham Palace is the traditional setting for state banquets, they may have opted to use a different royal residence this time due to the ongoing refurbishment at the iconic London location. During the banquet, Charles is expected to give a speech. Amid the ongoing war in Ukraine and immigration issues over the large number of people arriving on small boats from across the English channel, the King is expected to talk about how "our two countries face a multitude of complex threats, emanating from multiple directions." "As friends and as allies, we face them together," his speech includes. "These challenges know no borders: no fortress can protect us against them this time. Our two nations share not only values, but also the tireless determination to act on them in the world." The Macrons are expected to stay at Windsor Castle, where Queen Elizabeth primarily lived during her final years, during their visit. Can't get enough of PEOPLE's Royals coverage? Thailand's Cabinet withdraws a controversial bill to legalize casinosNew Foto - Thailand's Cabinet withdraws a controversial bill to legalize casinos

BANGKOK (AP) — Thailand's Cabinet on Tuesday withdrew a controversial bill that aims to legalize casinos after the Prime Minister was suspended last week over an ethics investigation. Deputy Minister of Finance Julapun Amornvivat said the government only wants to delay the bill and will reintroduce it at an appropriate time. He cited the current political situation and theCabinet reshuffleas a factor in the decision. The bill, also known as the "entertainment complexes bill," wasfirst approvedby the Cabinet in January and was awaiting review by lawmakers. If passed, it would allow casinos to operate within complexes that also house other businesses such as hotels, convention halls, malls or theme parks. The bill's withdrawal came after Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra was suspended by the Constitutional Court last week after a phone call between her and a senior Cambodian leader was leaked, sparkingfresh political turmoil. Paetongtarn is underan ethics investigationover accusations that she made comments that damaged Thailand's national interests to Cambodia's Senate President Hun Sen when the two discussed a recent border dispute last month. The ruling Pheu Thai Party has said the bill would help attract more investments, boost tourism and solve issues of illegal gambling. But it has faced strong opposition from the public and Pheu Thai's former coalition partner, Bhumjaithai Party, which quit the government last month over the leaked call. Julapun said the government needed more time to explain the benefits of the bill to the public, adding that the delay was regrettable. The Pheu Thai Party, which pledged to make the country's economic woes top of its agenda, stressed that casinos would be only a small part of a larger plan to boost tourism. Tourism is the main drive of the Thai economyand has always been the focus of the different administrations to improve the economy.

UK conservative politician Norman Tebbit, an icon of the Thatcher era, dies at 94New Foto - UK conservative politician Norman Tebbit, an icon of the Thatcher era, dies at 94

LONDON (AP) — Conservative politician Norman Tebbit, a key ally ofPrime Minister Margaret Thatcherin her free-market transformation of Britain, has died at the age of 94, his family said Tuesday. Tebbit's son William said he died peacefully at home late Monday. No cause was given. Tebbit was known for his role tackling the power of Britain's trade unions during the 1980s, and for his socially conservative and free-market views. He was famed for suggesting the unemployed should get on their bikes to look for work, and for what became known as Tebbit's "cricket test" – his 1990 assertion thatimmigrantscould not truly be British until they cheered for England at cricket, rather than India, Pakistan or the West Indies. Current Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch said Tebbit was "an icon in British politics." "He was one of the leading exponents of the philosophy we now know as Thatcherism and his unstinting service in the pursuit of improving our country should be held up as an inspiration to all Conservatives," she said. "He never buckled under pressure and he never compromised." A political bruiser known for no-holds-barred attacks on the opposition, Tebbit was nicknamed the "Chingford skinhead" by opponents. Michael Foot, who led the Labour Party in the 1980s, called him a "semi-house-trained polecat." However, even Tebbit's critics praised his stoic response to the Irish Republican Army bombing of Brighton's Grand Hotel during the Conservative Party conference in 1984. Five people were killed in the bombing, an attempt to kill Thatcher. Tebbit was seriously wounded and his wife Margaret was paralyzed from the neck down. Elected to the House of Commons in 1970, Tebbit served as employment secretary and trade secretary under Thatcher. In 1985 he was appointed chairman of the Conservative Party, helping Thatcher win a third straight election victory in 1987. The same year, he stepped down from the government so he could spend more time with his wife. In 1992 he was appointed to the House of Lords, Parliament's unelected upper chamber. He continued to speak out, especially on Britain's increasingly close relationship with Europe, about which he was skeptical. He was a prominent advocate of Britain's departure from the European Union, an issue that divided his party and the country. After a 1998 peace accord ended three decades of violence in Northern Ireland, many former militants entered politics, But Tebbit did not forgive. When the former IRA commander Martin McGuinness — who had become deputy first minister of Northern Ireland — died in 2017, Tebbit expressed hope he was "parked in a particularly hot and unpleasant corner of hell for the rest of eternity." Margaret Tebbit died in 2020. Tebbit is survived by two sons and a daughter.
