How "A League of Their Own" tricked audiences: 'We felt it was a gamble'

Everett Thirty-three years ago today, the historical baseball picA League of Their Ownstepped up to the plate and knocked it out of the park. Directed byPenny Marshalland starringGeena Davis,Lori Petty,Madonna,Rosie O'Donnell, and, as their grumbly coach,Tom Hanks, the film was a based-on-a-true-story look at the World War II-era All-American Girls Professional Baseball League — one of the first substantial women's sports organization in the country. The film was a box office winner and a critical success, too, becoming an instant summertime classic. The movie had laughs, thrills, camaraderie, classic lines ("There's no crying in baseball!"), and the requisite nail-biter that comes with any self-respecting sports movie. But the English on the ball came in the extra innings — a big ol' tug at the heartstrings when we flash-forward to "today," seeing the gals who kept baseball relevant during the war years finally getting their due with a Hall of Fame presentation. Everett The bookending sequences in Cooperstown, N.Y., feature what many viewers may think, at first, is just Geena Davis in some aging makeup. But it wasn't. It was an older actress in the part. However, there was a little movie magic going on there, so don't feel too bad if you were fooled. As the film's producer Elliot Abbott toldThe Los Angeles Timesin 1992, the wraparound scenes with other actresses had everyone a little nervous. "We felt it was a gamble," he said. "We didn't know whether or not it was going to work, which scared us to death." There was an extensive casting search done to find older versions of the main cast, and they were thrilled when actress Lynn Cartwright, in her mid-60s, auditioned to play the part of the mid-60s character Geena Davis played, Dottie Hinson. "We weren't just looking for someone who looked like her," Abbott explained. "We also were searching for someone who had the same behavior, someone whose mouth moved the same way, who said the same words in the same way. Lynn's mannerisms really matched up wonderfully with Geena." YouTube But there's a twist ending. Cartwright's voice was apparently much deeper than Davis', and this "would have pulled you out. It's all you would have thought about," according to the producer. So the decision was made to have Davis dub her own voice in. And that's probably why so many people (maybe even you!) think it's really Geena Davis in those scenes. The suspension of Thailand's prime minister over a leaked phone call stirs familiar turmoilNew Foto - The suspension of Thailand's prime minister over a leaked phone call stirs familiar turmoil

BANGKOK (AP) — The Constitutional Court's suspension ofThai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatrahas raised questions about whether her family's political comeback last year would end with another downfall. Paetongtarnwas the third prime ministerin her family, after her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecom billionaire who has been one of Thailand's top political operators, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who was the country's first female prime minister. Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006 and Yingluck by a court ruling in 2014. Thaksin remained beloved after his ouster among voters who saw in him and his allies a government that looked after their interests. While campaigning in 2022, Paetongtarn acknowledged her family ties but insisted she was not her father's proxy. "It's not the shadow of my dad. I am my dad's daughter, always and forever, but I have my own decisions," she said. She also said she hoped her government would be able to "build opportunity and quality of life" and "make the country go forward." Paetongtarn was suspended Tuesday by the court pending an ethics investigation a leaked phone call with senior Cambodian leader Hun Sen that was perceived as damaging to Thailand's interests and image. Eroding trust capped by a diplomatic blunder Her critics have said Paetongtarn's government has achieved little.Marriage equalitybecame law but was initiated under her predecessor.Controls on cannabiswere retightened after public backlash over decriminalization, but the move and its enforcement were called rushed and confusing. Her critics also cited unsatisfactory outcomes in other Pheu Thai party policies, like unequal minimum wage increases, constant changes in acash handout programand the stalled andcontroversial legalization of casinos. They also noted the lack of progress in tariffs talks with the United States. But analysts see the leaked call followingborder tensions with Cambodiato be the most disastrous event by far. The outrage has centeredon Paetongtarn's commentsabout an outspoken Thai army commander and the perception that she was trying to appease Hun Sen. Paetongtarn apologized but also denied that she had damaged the country. She ignored calls for her to resign or dissolve Parliament to take responsibility, which critics saw as an attempt by the Pheu Thai party to cling to power. Napon Jatusripitak, a political science researcher at Singapore's ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute, said her response seemed "totally disconnected from political reality" and that the scandal has exposed "her leadership failures and fuels accusations that she prioritizes family interests over national welfare." Adoration for the Shinawatra cools Her father, Thaksin, is believed to be the key decision maker behind Pheu Thai, now led by Paetongtarn. Time and again, Thaksin-backed parties have prevailed in national elections but could not stay in office after legal rulings and destabilizing street protests engineered by Thaksin's die-hard foes. But in 2023, Thaksin alienated many of his old supporters with what looked like aself-serving dealwith his former conservative opponents. It allowed hisreturn from exileand his party to form the new government, while sidelining the progressiveMove Forward Party, which finished first in a national election but was seen by the conservative establishment as a greater threat. Now with the current crisis, things could drastically change for the Shinawatra family. "In light of the recent controversy, the Shinawatra spell has been broken. The only viable Shinawatra scion is now tainted," Napon said. "It would be an understatement to say that the Shinawatra name no longer guarantees electoral success." And not everything has been squared away with her family's enemies. Yingluck remains in exile, andlegal problems— arguably politically inspired — could send her to prison if she returns to Thailand. Thaksin also still facessome legal challenges. Thailand's royalist establishment has long been disturbed that Thaksin's populist policies appeared to threaten their status and that of the monarchy at the heart of Thai identity. Paetongtarn now alsofaces protestsby familiar faces from the same conservative, pro-royalist group that opposed her father. "History seems to be repeating itself in a way. Thailand seems trapped in a depressingly familiar cycle where Shinawatra-led governments come to power, only to face mounting pressure from traditional power centers, street protests, and extraparliamentary interventions that ultimately force them from office," Napon said. Paetongtarn, 38, is the youngest of Thaksin's three children. She was an executive in a hotel business run by her family before making her public entry into politics in 2021 when the Pheu Thai party named her to lead an advisory committee. She has two children with her husband, Pitaka Suksawat, who was a commercial pilot before he began working in one of the Shinawatras' real estate ventures.

Beyond the Gates' Ashley Morgan and her on-screen mom, Jan, might not have the best luck in love, but that's not quiet the case for Ashley's portrayer,Jen Jacob,or her real-life parents. Jacob shared a touching tribute to them on social media in honor of their 40th wedding anniversary. Jacob took to Instagram to share a heartwarming video from her wedding where she is seen dancing with her father, only for her mother to join in, all to the beat of The Temptations hit song, My Girl. Jacob then gives fans a brief glimpse at her parents throughout the years, and captions her tribute; "Today my parents celebrate 40 years married. And here's the thing about being the child to a 40 year commitment…you get to watch it grow. 🌱 I've seen my parents marriage from almost every vantage point. I saw it in the backseat, buckled into the car, legs bouncing with the shifts of the road, I saw him hold her hand as they fought about the best way to get to her mother's. I heard it from the top of the staircase when he came home from work late, well after I was put to bed. I looked up to it as they placed me on the ground to fuss with Lindsay's scraped knees. I saw out to it in every audience as I surveyed from the stage, looking for their seats. They never missed a show, not once. I said goodbye to it when they left us with ravioli on date nights, and good morning to it as we jumped in their bed and snuggled in to watch Nickelodeon on special mornings. I sat with it when they got the heaviest news two people in love could possibly get, and I sat between it at her funeral too. I danced along side it at my wedding — having the Father-Daughter dance without my mom just didn't feel right. I sang with it on every birthday and I watched it standing there as I went off on my own for the very first time, waving to me from the driveway. I saw it when it was hurting, I saw it when it was laughing, I saw it when it was almost over and I saw it get put back together again too. I saw it get chosen, over and over and over again. And I saw it on their wedding day, I just didn't know it yet. Mom and Dad, thank you for teaching me how to choose love in this world. Kindness, forgiveness, strength and honoring your words, too. But most of all, love. 💕" View this post on Instagram A post shared by Jen Jacob (@jen.jacob) CBS officially describesBeyond the Gatesas a soap opera that is "set in a leafy Maryland suburb just outside of Washington, D.C., in one the most affluent African American counties in the United States; a posh gated community with winding tree-lined streets and luxurious mansions to call home. Key data used in hurricane forecasting will be cut by end of July, NOAA saysNew Foto - Key data used in hurricane forecasting will be cut by end of July, NOAA says

A satellite program that has historically been a key source of weather forecasting data will be discontinued by July 31, as the United States enters peak hurricane season, according to thealready resource-strappedNational Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The federal agency, which includes the National Weather Service, initially said last week that it was going to lose access to the satellite data by June 30. But in anupdateposted online on Monday, NOAA said the deadline to decommission the satellite system was pushed to July 31, at the request of a top official at NASA. Operated by the U.S. Department of Defense, theDefense Meteorological Satellite Programhas since the 1960s collected environmental information each day from satellites orbiting Earth, in order to provide real-time details about conditions in the atmosphere and oceans to the military. The data was made available to weather scientists for traditional forecasting purposes, after being processed by a branch of the Navy that focuses on meteorology and oceanography. Starting Aug. 1, that naval branch will no longer process or upload satellite data to the computing interface where meteorologists previously accessed it, according to NOAA. In an email that the agency reposted online, the deputy director of its Office of Satellite and Product Operations said the Navy decided to implement that change in efforts "to mitigate a significant cybersecurity risk" but would continue to distribute the data through the end of next month. A Navy spokesperson told CBS News in an email that it is "discontinuing contributions" to the satellite program "given the program no longer meets our information technology modernization requirements." NOAA spokesperson Kim Doster called it a "routine process of data rotation and replacement" in a statement to CBS News on Monday, adding that remaining data sources remaining "are fully capable of providing a complete suite of cutting-edge data and models that ensure the gold-standard weather forecasting the American people deserve." "The DMSP is a single dataset in a robust suite of hurricane forecasting and modeling tools in the NWS portfolio," said Doster, citing several other satellites that feed into the National Weather Service's forecasting models, including one launched recently that, accordingto the U.S. Space Force, "advances weather monitoring." The data cutoff from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program comes after NOAA lost a substantial chunk of its staff to layoffs and buyouts earlier this year, stemming from President Trump'sinitiative to reduce government spendingin part by shrinking the federal workforce. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30, and NOAA forecasters said in May that they expected this one to bemore active than an average year. The season typically reaches its "peak," its most active period, around August and September.
