When Donna Mills decided to become an actress, she hadn't expected the intense fame that came along with the '80s primetime soap opera Knots Landing.

"You don't think about kind of the crazies that are going to be out there," Mills, who played the villainous Abby on much of the long-running series, explained on an episode of Steve Kmetko's Still Here Hollywood podcast. "I've had a couple of those stalker kind of people and stuff like that. That's kind of scary."

One instance was particularly terrifying for Mills, who portrayed Abby from the CBS show's second season in 1980 through season 10, which ended in 1989. But she returned to the Emmy-winning drama about the couples in an upscale Los Angeles cul-de-sac for its 1993 conclusion.

Mills described an ordeal with someone who took a particular interest in seeing her onscreen.

"One of them was a guy who escaped from prison, and the detectives called me up and they said, 'I'd leave town if I were you,'" she recalled. "Because he was obsessed with me. Most people, when they escape from prison, try to run away."

In this case, though, Mills was told by authorities, the prisoner was expected to be coming to look for her.

"I left and went to another city and checked into a hotel under an assumed name," said Mills, who's now 85. "About a week later, they caught him [and] killed him."

She would find out later that he was someone she had previously encountered.

"He had been trying to sell a story to the National Enquirer [saying] that he was my boyfriend, because he had a picture with me," said Mills, noting that she often would have brief encounters with strangers who wanted a photo with her. "And actually, the National Enquirer — I give them credit for this — they called me up, and they said, 'This guy is saying he's your boyfriend.' But they said, 'We don't believe him,' and I said, 'Don't believe him. It's ridiculous.' So they never printed it."
