Scream 7 honors Rose McGowan's character in a "beautiful" way.

The seventh installment of the Scream franchise, which opens in theaters on Feb. 27, sees the return of Neve Campbell's Sidney Prescott and introduces her teenage daughter Tatum, played by 1883's Isabel May.

If that name sounds familiar, it is because Tatum is Rose McGowan's character in the original Scream. Tatum is Sidney's best friend and the victim of one of the franchise's most iconic death scenes.

While at a house party, Tatum goes to the garage to fetch some drinks when Ghostface attacks her. As she tries to escape through a cat flap in the garage door, Tatum gets stuck. The killer then activates the garage door, eventually snapping Tatum's neck and killing her.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while on the set of the upcoming horror film, Campbell opened up about what the homage meant to her.

"Isn't that beautiful," Campbell said. "Rose did such a beautiful job in this movie and that character is beloved and missed. It makes sense that Sidney would name her daughter Tatum. It makes a lot of sense."

"I think it's a lovely idea," she added.

In Scream 7, Tatum becomes Ghostface's next target.

"When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the quiet town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target," an official synopsis reads. "Determined to protect her family, Sidney must face the horrors of her past to put an end to the bloodshed once and for all."

Campbell isn't the only original actor reprising their role in the latest installment, as Scream veterans Matthew Lillard, David Arquette and Courtney Cox return to the big screen.

"I'm thrilled to be back," Lillard said at Silver Scream Con on Sept. 14. "The movie's fantastic, and I'm really excited for people to see it. It's not gonna ruin the franchise, that's the good news. I don't think!"

Scream creator and original screenwriter Kevin Williams will also make his return to the franchise, following the death of original director Wes Craven in 2015. He directed and co-wrote the film, which is also written by Guy Busick with a story by Busick and James Vanderbilt, both of whom also worked on 2022's Scream and Scream VI.

Mason Gooding and Jasmine Savoy Brown will reprise their roles from Scream (2022) and Scream VI. Joel McHale joins the cast as Sidney's husband Mark Evans. Mark Evans. Scott Foley, who played Roman Bridger in 2000's Scream 3, is also part of the newest installment. Anna Camp, Mark Consuelos, Ethan Embry, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Celeste O'Connor, Sam Rechner, Michelle Randolph and Jimmy Tatro also appear in the new movie.

Scream 7 slashes into theaters Feb. 27, 2026.
