Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) on his trusty horse in 'Wicked: For Good'. Credit:
- *Wicked* hair and makeup department head Frances Hannon reveals they made a custom blue dye for the films.
- Four horses were actually used to play Fiyero's trusty steed.
- One of the horses has a longtime connection to Fiyero actor Jonathan Bailey.
Hair and makeup aren't just for actors. *Neigh*, it can also be for the animals on set.
*Wicked* hair and makeup department head Frances Hannon tells ** that her team went to great lengths to get Fiyero's horse, named Feldspar, so "very iridescent blue."
Complicating matters was the fact that a total of four steeds were hired to play Feldspar.
"If you actually saw it more often, you'd see that they used different horses for different sequences," Hannon says. "One horse stood still, one ran well, and one posed better, and Jonathan preferred one," Hannon explains, referencing that one of the stallions was the same one Fiyero actor Jonathan Bailey also used on *Bridgerton*.
And they all started out different colors ("One was white, one was brown, and one dark brown…"), so Hannon and team actually shaved the horses down before applying a dye brought in from Japan, which they knew would be safe for the horses.
"Then all the horses were painted with iridescent color," Hannon continues. "[SFX makeup artist] David Stoneman and I designed it, because it had never been done before — using horse oil as the base and the iridescent added to it, which also came from Japan."
Finally, the team added hair extensions to their mains and tails so that they all matched perfectly.
This isn't the first time four horses were used to portray a steed of Oz.
In 1939's* Wizard of Oz*, four different horses were "tinted" (the ASPCA apparently refused to allow them to be dyed) with lemon-, cherry-, and grape-flavored powdered gelatin. Yes, like Jell-O mix.

Of course, 85 years later, there is the option of using CGI, but Hannon is grateful for how much *Wicked *director Jon M. Chu pushed for practical sets and effects.
"I do think it's made the most enormous difference, being like that Old Hollywood great, rather than the bluescreen and greenscreen that our industry is so used to now," she says.
