After Mickey sees Sam's dead body in his trunk and is arrested for his murder, he knows that the only way he can prove his innocence is finding out the truth about Sam's killing. Mickey and his legal team, which includes Lorna and Maggie, quickly discover that Sam had a relationship with one of Mickey's enemies, Armenian mobster Alex Garizian (Michael A. Goorjian).
It's soon revealed that Sam and Alex were working together on a massive scam involving biofuel. The scheme, which was called "Bleeding the Beast," centered around Alex's company, BioGreen, claiming to convert bio waste into bio fuel.
However, the company is a front; Alex is switching out the labels and not providing the biofuel, all while still getting government subsidies. Sam was connected to the plot because his truck company, AirKing Trucking, only had one client — BioGreen.
While the scam was going to plan for a little, Sam switched up and started skimming money off the top. As Maggie said at one point, "Sam was scamming the scammers."
Alex had someone kill Sam as a result of his conning, and it didn't take long for him to realize that he could frame Mickey, one of his enemies, at the same time. He killed Sam in Mickey's garage before putting the body in his trunk and framing the lawyer.
Although Alex killed Sam because of the money, it's later uncovered that Sam was actually working with the FBI as an informant to gather evidence on Alex's operation.

When Mickey finally discovers the bombshell information, he tries to figure out a way to have Alex's girlfriend, Jeanine, testify about what she knows. Unfortunately, it's not that simple, as Mickey gets kidnapped by the FBI who confirms his theory about Sam and Alex.
The FBI agents also explain that if Mickey makes the allegations in court, their entire operation will be compromised, and they also won't be able to testify on his behalf.
"It's not a one-off scam. It's happening all over the country," Agent Ruth (Sasha Alexander) explains. "The players behind the scam are all the same, too. Some of the biggest organized crime groups in America, taking in millions."
Mickey is forced to go back to his trial where prosecutor Dana Berg (Constance Zimmer) is stopping at nothing to convict him. Although the FBI won't help him, Mickey convinces Jeanine to testify about Alex killing Sam over the money — despite her potential to be in grave danger from the mob afterward.
Right before Jeanine is set to take the stand, Mickey's judge gets a note that causes him to pause the case and talk to Mickey and Dana. In his office, Agent Ruth is standing beside the District Attorney Adam Suarez (Philip Anthony-Rodriguez) and FBI agent Steven Tremblay (Larry Poindexter).
The three explain that Jeanine cannot testify because of the retaliation danger, but the DA will drop the charges against Mickey as long as he promises to not speak about the FBI investigating the scams.
While Mickey is relieved that he won't be serving life in prison for a crime he didn't commit, he still doesn't feel like justice has been served. He asks Dana to publicly exonerate him, so he can go back to being the trustworthy defense attorney he was before the ordeal. She holds a press conference and tells the world that Mickey is innocent.

Throughout the four seasons of The Lincoln Lawyer, it's always been a will they, won't they situation for exes Mickey and Maggie. The two lawyers definitely get closer as she helped represent him in his trial, but sadly for some fans, they ultimately did not get back together by the end of season 4.
Even though they both still love each other, Maggie — who works on the opposite side of the bench as a deputy district attorney — still struggles to relate to Mickey's need to represent defendants. She gained a deeper perspective by helping her wrongly accused ex-husband, but she still isn't totally onboard.

In the last few moments of The Lincoln Lawyer season 4, things finally seem to be returning to normal. Mickey takes a joy ride in his beloved Lincoln Continental and stops at the grocery store. While there, he notices a woman, played by actress Cobie Smulders, who is staring at him and seems like she wants to talk.
As Mickey goes back to his car, the woman rushes up to talk to him. All of the sudden, shots are fired at them, so the woman pushes Mickey out of the way and saves his life.
The two head to a police station where Agent Ruth appears and informs Mickey that the Armenian mob is still targeting him — despite Alex being killed by fellow mobsters. After hearing all of this shocking information, Mickey learns one last bombshell: the woman who saved him is his sister.
