The latest trailer for A24's horror movie undertone proves that the movie will do for audio recordings what The Ring did for videotapes. Listen at your own risk.
The film follows Evy (Nina Kiri), a skeptic who cohosts a paranormal podcast with believer Justin (Adam DeMarco). When Justin sends her 10 mysterious audio files, Evy — who is working from home while caring for her ill mother — listens without a thought. Unfortunately for Evy, that proves to be a colossal mistake, as whatever entity is attached to those files only wants the worst for her.
And those audio files? Boy, are they creepy. The static-filled sounds evoke children's songs, dark whispers and a woman's voice saying very unsettling things, like whispering, "Is everyone asleep?"
"What if it's a warning?" Justin asks Evy. One thing's clear: If Evy was a skeptic at the beginning of the film, she sure as hell won't by the time it's over.
Directed by Ian Tuason in his feature debut, undertone first premiered at Fantasia International Film Festival in July 2025. It was played again at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, where Tuason told TheWrap that he wanted to make a film set in one location — he chose to film the movie in his childhood home. The house was also where Tuason cared for his dying parents years earlier, an experience that he said inspired the film.
"My dad was kind of independent still, but my mom was dependent on me, and then I was just kind of watching her," Tuason said of the movie, which he originally started working on as a radio play. "I started thinking back to when I was a kid and I saw The Exorcist, which is the scariest movie I've seen. I wanted to make something as scary, but I needed to find something to weaponize as 'safe' as a daughter at home. I couldn't think of it until I saw my mom helpless."
Prior to undertone, Tuason became well known in the horror community for his live-action, virtual reality horror shorts on YouTube. He is attached to reboot the Paranormal Activity franchise.
