- Sarah Pender was sentenced to 110 years in prison for the 2000 murders of Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman.

- Pender, who claims she's innocent of the murders, escaped prison in 2008 and managed to elude authorities for over four months.

- A documentary about her story, *Girl on the Run: The Hunt for America's Most Wanted Woman*, is now streaming on Hulu.

In 2008, a 29-year-old whom a prosecutor described as having a "Charles Manson-like ability to manipulate people," escaped from the Rockville Correctional Facility in Indiana. That woman, Sarah Pender, is the subject of the new ABC News docuseries *Girl on the Run: The Hunt for America's Most Wanted Woman*.

The title is no joke. Following her escape, Pender was among the 15 most-wanted fugitives by U.S. Marshals, due in part to the brutal nature of her conviction and her ability to elude authorities across four months and three states.

So, who is Sarah Pender? How did she end up in jail? And, most compellingly, how did she manage to escape? We answer those questions, and explain where she is now, below.

Who is Sarah Pender?

Sarah Pender's mugshot

Sarah Pender's mugshot.

Sarah Pender was born on May 29, 1979, in Greenfield, Ind., roughly 30 minutes from downtown Indianapolis. In the documentary, her parents describe her as "kind and considerate" and highly intelligent. After graduating high school, she attended Purdue University, where she studied biophysics, biochemistry, and calculus.

But, as Pender tells it, her studies left her uninspired and she flunked many of her classes. She credits the divorce of her parents when she was six with her fear of abandonment. Her self-worth, she says, came not from her intelligence, but from "making other people happy."

After dropping out of college and getting a job, Pender got serious with Richard Hull, a convicted felon and drug dealer. The couple moved into a house in Indianapolis with old friends of Hull's, Andrew Cataldi and Tricia Nordman. According to Hull, he and Caraldi began selling drugs together.**

On Oct. 27, 2000, Hull was arrested after the dead bodies of Cataldi and Nordman were found in a dumpster near their home. Pender was arrested the following day. Cataldi and Nordman had been shot, killed, and disposed of on Oct. 24.

According to Pender, she went for a walk on the evening of Oct. 24. When she returned home, she saw blood on the floor and found Hull wrapping Nordman's body in a blanket. Fearing for her safety, she agreed to help Hull dispose of the bodies in a nearby dumpster.

Hull, meanwhile, claimed that Pender was behind the murders, alleging that he found her holding the shotgun that killed Cataldi and Nordman next to their dead bodies.

Larry Sells, a deputy prosecutor in Marion County at the time, believed that Pender had manipulated Hull into committing the murders, characterizing her as a "female Charles Manson."

Evidence against her included:

- Pender was the one who bought the shotgun that killed Cataldi and Nordman on the morning of the murders.

- Floyd Pennington, an incarcerated penpal of Pender's, testified that she told him she was the mastermind behind the shooting.

- Hull's attorney produced a letter allegedly written to him by Pender in which she confessed to doing the murders while on LSD. (Hull later admitted in an affidavit that the letter was fake.)

While this evidence would later prove contentious, she was found guilty of the murders. In August 2002, she was sentenced to 110 years in prison.

The following year, Hull was sentenced to 75 years after pleading guilty to the murders and admitting he was the sole shooter.**

How did Sarah Pender escape prison?

Pender, the first inmate to break out of the Rockville Correctional Facility, escaped with the help of a correctional officer, Scott Spitler, and a friend and former inmate named Jamie Long.

According to official court documents, Pender agreed to pay Spitler $15,000 to assist her in escaping from prison. In the documentary, Pender alleges that he'd helped her obtain contraband she sold to her fellow inmates, and also that he initiated a sexual relationship with her. "I did what I had to do," she says.

On Aug. 4, 2008, after getting her a cellphone and a set of civilian clothes, Spitler snuck Pender into a van and drove her out the back gate and into the visitor parking lot, where she transferred to Long's vehicle and driven to a local safe house.

How long was Sarah Pender on the run?

Pender evaded authorities for roughly four months — 138 days, to be exact — with the help of several former inmates and a "sugar daddy" she met during a threesome.

- Long, with whom Pender shared a romantic relationship in prison, helped set her up in a safe house.

- Peggy Darlington, another former cellmate who believed Pender to be innocent, worked with Long to help deliver money to Pender. Darlington was not accused of any wrongdoing.

- Pender claims in the documentary that an exotic dancer offered her refuge. To help Pender make money, she invited her to participate in a threesome with a client from the club where she worked.

- This man became, in Pender's words, her "sugar daddy," continuing to date her even after finding out she was a fugitive. He helped set her up with a job and a place to stay in Cincinnati.

Throughout the several months she was on the run, Pender routinely moved locations, cut and dyed her hair, and wore colored contacts to help evade detection. Eventually, she uprooted from Ohio to Illinois, landing a job through a friend in Chicago and using the name Ashley Thompson.

In the doc, she recalls her time in Chicago as blissful. "There was not a time I did not enjoy experiencing new things," she said.**

How was Sarah Pender caught?

Roughly a month after escaping Rockville Correctional Facility, Pender was featured on an episode of *America's Most Wanted*. In October 2008, she was placed on U.S. Marshals' list of the 15 most wanted fugitives.

On Dec. 22, 2008, she was arrested at her apartment on the north side of Chicago thanks to an anonymous tipster. As she details on *Girl on the Run*, she considered fleeing through the back door after the realizing the cops had arrived, but she'd grown tired of running.

"The universe let me out of prison," she says, "and now the universe is telling me it's time to go back."**

Her escape and capture was dramatized in a 2012 Lifetime movie, *She Made Them Do It*, starring Jenna Dewan-Tatum.

After getting caught, Pender was placed in solitary confinement for more than five years. "I was told by officers, 'You embarrassed the Department of Corrections. Therefore, they're going to keep you in solitary confinement,'" she says.**

Over the past 15 years, Pender has worked with various attorneys and, in a surprising twist, Larry Sells, the Marion County deputy prosecutor who fought to put her behind bars, to reduce her sentence.

Sells changed his tune after learning that much of the evidence against Pender has been disputed. Pennington's testimony, for example, was deemed dubious after it was revealed he kept a "snitch list" of people he would inform on if it meant getting a plea deal. The letter to Hull in which Pender allegedly confessed to committing the murders was later deemed a fake, with Hull himself admitting that his cellmate wrote it.

Pender, meanwhile, claims she bought the murder weapon since Hull, due to his prior felonies, couldn't purchase a gun himself. She says she had no idea he would use it for murder.

Their efforts, however, have not panned out. In January 2026, a Marion County judge rejected Pender's request to modify her sentence so she could be released. According to *Girl on the Run*, she won't be eligible for parole until 2054, when she'll be 75 years old.**

After a week filled with incendiary fan reaction and on-camera clashes over political topics, *The View* stars have given guest cohost and MAGA supporter Savannah Chrisley a report card for her performance at the table.

Longtime cohost Joy Behar kicked off Chrisley's final day on *The View* by admitting that she wasn't sure of how to properly pronounce the *Chrisley Knows Best* reality TV star's last name.

"Savannah *Chrisley* — it's *Chrisley*, right?" the 83-year-old asked the guest panelist, whose parents, Todd and Julie Chrisley, were given a presidential pardon by Donald Trump amid their combined 19-year prison sentence for bank fraud and tax evasion.**

Behar continued, telling the audience, "She is back as our guest cohost. I believe this is your last day though. For now, for now! You never know around here!"

Chrisley then voiced her gratitude for the weeklong stint, as she filled in for permanent cohost Alyssa Farah Griffin, who's on maternity leave.

"I just want to thank you all for giving me a voice and allowing me to sit at the table and believe totally differently, but have conversations that are hard and respectful," Chrisley said. "It's the moments off camera that people don't get to see where we really do have more in common than we are different."

She explained to the personalities that she recently told her father that "Joy is my favorite" on the show, and said that he replied, "That's unexpected!" given the pair's difference in political beliefs.

"I'm glad we've gone through a week and nobody needs electroshock therapy," Republican commentator Ana Navarro joked, while Sunny Hostin looked toward Chrisley and smiled as she said, "It's been a pleasure."

Behar sent the cohost off with a positive message, telling her, "You were very good and very sweet. We all like you very much. I'm happy to have had you here."

The cohosts' words came after two consecutive days of tense back-and-forths with Chrisley, who on Thursday defended Trump against Hostin's claim that the president is racist.

"Let's call a thing a thing. Donald Trump is a racist. There's no question in my mind," Hostin said before invoking a recent controversy. "The most recent thing that he did by posting on Truth Social the Obamas depicted as apes in *The Lion King, *[when] there are no apes in *The Lion King*, that was a racist act. He tried to blame a staffer."

**Chrisley defended Trump, telling Hostin, "It was in fact a staffer who posted it," and repeatedly pushing back against the former federal prosecutor's insistence that Trump is racist.

Earlier this week, the panel also united to challenge Chrisley's false claim about New York congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, after moderator Whoopi Goldberg singled out Trump for consistently bumbling through press statements, noting that she "can't take it from the guy who says he's the leader of the free world."

Chrisley held firm in her defense of the man who pardoned her parents, telling the stars, "I understand that wholeheartedly. AOC, though, is also the Democrats' pick for the next election."

The group quickly replied, with Goldberg and Sara Haines shaking their heads, as the EGOT-winning *Ghost* actress stressed, "No, no, no!"

Other guest cohosts set to fill in for Griffin over the weeks ahead include Whitney Cummings and controversial former *View* panelist Elisabeth Hasselbeck, who publicly slammed the program and Behar at the top of 2025.

*The View* airs weekdays on ABC.

Eric Dane used this final interview before his death to share some words of wisdom for his teen daughters, Billie and Georgia.

The late actor's family announced his death on Thursday, sharing that Dane had died at the age of 53, following a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). His death occurred just 10 months after Dane announced that he had been diagnosed with the debilitating disease.

Throughout his battle against ALS, the former *Grey's Anatomy* star was candid about his daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, whom he shared with his estranged wife Rebecca Gayheart, being his motivation to fight the disease. That sentiment is rife in the final words he shared during his taping of Netflix's *Famous Last Words* in November 2025 — an interview that he understood would only be released after he had passed. The episode was released Friday, a day after Dane's death.**

"Billie and Georgia, these words are for you," Dane said while speaking directly to the camera to deliver his final public thoughts to his children. "I tried. I stumbled sometimes, but I tried. Overall we had a blast, didn't we? I remember all the times we spent at the beach, the two of you, me and mom -- in Santa Monica, Hawaii, Mexico. I see you now playing in the ocean for hours, my water babies. Those days, pun intended, were heaven."

Dane, whose mobility had visibly deteriorated since he shared his diagnosis in April 2025, said to his daughters that he wanted to share "four things I've learned from this disease," adding that he hoped they "don't just listen to me. I hope you'll hear me."

"First, live now. Right now. In the present. It's hard, but I learned to do that," he began. "For years, I have been wandering around mentally and lost in my head for long chunks of time, wallowing and worrying in self-pity, shame, and doubt. I've replayed decisions, second-guessed myself. 'I shouldn't have done this. I never should've that.' No more. Out of pure survival, I am forced to stay in the present. But I don't want to be anywhere else. The past contains regrets. The future remains unknown. So you have to live now. The present is all you have. Treasure it. Cherish every moment."

The second thing Dane said he learned was the importance of falling in love. "Not necessarily with a person, although I do recommend that as well. But fall in love with something. Find your passion, your joy. Find the thing that makes you want to get up in the morning, drives you through the entire day."

"I fell in love for the first time when I was about your age. I fell in love with acting," he went on. "That love eventually got me through my darkest hours, my darkest days, my darkest year. I still love my work, I still look forward to it, I still want to get in front of a camera and play my part. My work doesn't define me, but it excites me. Find something that excites you. Find your path, your purpose, your dream. Then go for it. Really go for it."**

Third was to choose their friends wisely. Dane told his daughters to "find your people and allow them to find you. And then give yourselves to them. The best of them will give back to you. No judgment, no conditions, no questions asked."

"I'm so thankful for my very close family and friends. Every single one has stepped up," he shared. "I can't do little things I used to do. I can't drive around, go to the gym, get coffee, hang out. But I've learned to embrace alternatives. My friends come to me, we eat together, watch a game, listen to music. They don't do anything special, they just show up. That's a big one. Just show up. And love your friends with everything you have. Hang onto them. They will entertain you, guide you, help you, support you, and some will save you."

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

For his final bit of wisdom, Dane told his daughters to do something that he bravely exemplified during his final months. "Fight with every ounce of your being, and with dignity," he said. "When you face challenges, health or otherwise, fight. Never give up. Fight until your last breath. This disease is slowly taking my body, but it will never take my spirit."

"The two of you are different people. But you're both strong and resilient. You inherited resiliency from me. That's my superpower," the *Charmed *alum quipped. "You knock me down, I bounce right up, and I keep coming back. I get up again, and again, and again. Mark says I'm like a cat, except a cat has nine lives, and I'm on number 15 — easily. So when something unexpected hits you, and it will because that's life, fight and face it with honesty, integrity, and grace, even if it feels or seems insurmountable."

Concluding his message, Dane told his daughters that he hoped he had shown them that they could face "anything."

"You can face the end of your days. You can face hell with dignity. Fight, girls, and hold your heads high," the father of two passionately finished. "Billie and Georgia, you are my heart. You are my everything. Good night. I love you. Those are my last words."**

After sharing his diagnosis, Dane became the face of a public campaign to find federal funding for research on the incurable neurological disease. In September, a noticeably less mobile Dane joined doctors and representatives from the I Am ALS organization for a discussion with California Congressman Eric Swalwell about investing in innovative treatments to ensure access to quality care for those diagnosed with ALS, as well as their families and researchers.

Dane had also been brutally honest about the reality of his ailment as he navigated his rapidly progressing disease. But despite the bleakness of his situation, the actor described his spirit as buoyant to interviewer Brad Falchuk as he reflected on his life for the posthumous interview series. "There's no reason for me to be happy in any individual moment, but I am."

"Eric and I were the same age when we discussed his life and legacy, so the conversation felt uniquely moving and personal," Falchuk said in a statement. "There was no self-pity in Eric. He refused to complain. He was brave, soulful, charming, joyful, grateful, and hilarious — and when he flashed that smile, he was undeniably still a leading man. His final words at the end of the episode are truly beautiful. I will miss him."

- *Traitors* star Candiace Dillard Bassett's husband, *RHOP* personality Chris Bassett, has slammed fellow *Traitors* star Rob Rausch.

- "HE DONT LIKE WOMEN!!" Bassett wrote on X after Rausch targeted Dillard Bassett and Lisa Rinna at the roundtable.

- A source tells EW the claim about Rausch is "outrageous and ridiculous."

She might've been ousted from *The Traitors'* turret, but *Real Housewives* alum Candiace Dillard Bassett's husband is driving back the drama in her absence.

In two consecutive instances of traitor-on-traitor backstabbing at the hands of *Love Island* personality Rob Rausch, Dillard Bassett and fellow traitor Lisa Rinna were eliminated from the Emmy-winning Peacock reality competition series' fourth season after Rausch successfully gunned for both *Real Housewives* stars during roundtable deliberations.

Now, Dillard Bassett's husband, *Real Housewives of Potomac* personality Chris Bassett, has alleged that Rausch might be playing a gender-based game with his strategy.

"The way #RobRausch is going up for Eric and protecting him while his name is being mentioned….but signed off on and led the charge against Lisa and Candiace….HE DONT LIKE WOMEN!!" Bassett wrote Thursday night on X, referencing the newest episode highlighting Rausch's voiced intention to protect singer Eric Nam, whom he recruited to be a traitor after the elimination of his OG traitor team that included Dillard Bassett and Rinna.

A fan then replied to Bassett's allegation, writing that "Lisa's days were numbered. Natalie even said it tonight, u have to keep the players who will have ur back. And lets be real, Candiace went at Rob, Rob didn't go at Candiace. I genuinely think if she didn't say his name, she'd still be in the game right now." Bassett doubled down, responding, "Rob was never working with a woman…he has shown this the whole series….and he literally led the charge against Candiace."

** has reached out to representatives for Peacock, Rausch, and Dillard Bassett for comment.

A source close to the situation tells EW the claim about Rausch is "outrageous and ridiculous."

"Rob is playing this game strategically and to win, regardless of who the players left are," the source continued. "He's playing to win like everybody else."

*The Traitors* season 4 has been fraught with drama both on and off the small screen, particularly surrounding the casting and gameplay of controversial *Bachelor* star Colton Underwood and his dynamic with Rinna.

Amid their light tension on the show amid Underwood's (ultimately correct) speculation that Rinna was a traitor, the *Real Housewives* personality called him "a stalker" in a post on Threads on Jan. 23. Rinna's post appeared to reference a restraining order against him filed by his ex, Cassie Randolph, in 2020. Randolph claimed at the time that Underwood placed a tracking device on her vehicle, though the order was eventually dropped.

Things intensified on the show when Underwood said he'd hold Rinna "hostage" as a traitor, and bubbled up to the point that rumors circulated that Underwood stormed out of the upcoming *Traitors* reunion episode over the resulting drama.

"But let's put it on the record, because they probably won't air it, right?" Rinna told *Variety* of their clash on the reunion, but said she didn't see Underwood storm out of the taping. "I said, 'Colton, I have a question for you: What did you mean when you said, 'I'm going to take her hostage?'' That's all I said. And that spun him out."

*Traitors* season 4 competitor Dorinda Medley (also originally from the *Real Housewives* franchise) told EW that she also didn't witness Underwood storm out of the reunion.**

"He didn't walk off set. Who said that? Unless I missed something," Medley told EW. "I swear to God, maybe I'm wrong, but I don't remember any walk-offs. You have to tune in and see. I guess *I* have to tune in and see, because I was in the back row just thinking, 'When is this going to be over?'"

Speaking on her elimination and fan discussions about alleged biases coming into play on the show, seeing as many contestants of color were eliminated early, Dillard Bassett additionally told EW that she thinks the Alan Cumming-hosted show is "does cast this light on society," and said that Black people "are expressive and we are a colorful personality in the room. And when you're in a game where everyone's senses are heightened, I think it's easier to go to the glitter in the room, the star in the room, and begin to question those people."

She later added, "It was interesting to bear witness to those biases and have it serve as a reminder to all of us and hopefully to the audience that this is something that we should all be looking out for and trying to thwart."

Shia LaBeouf was photographed taking a jog around New Orleans and grabbing lunch just two days after he was arrested following an alleged altercation during Mardi Gras celebrations.

In one photo captured on Thursday, Feb. 19, he could be seen jogging shirtless with black shorts, black and white shoes and black earphones in, as he looked ahead. Other photos captured of the actor the same day showed him in a salmon colored shirt, tan colored shorts and black sneakers as he grabbed a beverage.

The photos come after his arrest shortly after midnight on Tuesday, Feb. 17 outside a bar in the city's French Quarter. He was charged with two counts of simple battery.

One of the alleged victims in the incident, Jeffrey Damnit (born Jeffrey Klein), told PEOPLE that the confrontation began around 5 p.m. Monday at Royal Street Inn & R Bar in the French Quarter.

He claimed that the actor, 39, hurled homophobic slurs at the bar and then a few hours later, when staff eventually escorted him outside, began "screaming at everybody" and "lunging at" patrons.

Damnit alleged LaBeouf jumped at him and struck him, knocking him back and the actor punched a bartender in the face. He said that several people ultimately restrained LaBeouf while waiting for officers.

An initial police report obtained by PEOPLE stated that one alleged victim was struck "in his face with a closed fist causing his nose to possibly dislocate" and said he "pushed his nose back into place" himself.

The report further alleged that LaBeouf "used the word 'f----t'" multiple times and that following the incident, the Fury star was transported for medical treatment and, upon release, arrested and booked on two counts of simple battery.

LaBeouf was eventually released from jail and was seen partying on Bourbon Street hours after his arrest while holding his blue-and-white jail release paperwork in his mouth.

LaBeouf's reps did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment at the time.

The actor has previously had a long and highly publicized history of legal troubles. He previously was arrested in Georgia in 2017 on charges of public intoxication and disorderly conduct and was later ordered to attend court-mandated treatment.

Musician FKA Twigs also filed a lawsuit against LaBeouf alleging sexual battery, assault and infliction of emotional distress in December 2020. The case was settled in July 2025 and LaBeouf denied the allegations.

Eric Dane, known for his roles on "Grey's Anatomy" and "Euphoria," died this week from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis at age 53.

The fatal nervous system disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, killed Dane less than a year after he announced his diagnosis.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ALS is rare. In 2022, there were nearly 33,000 estimated cases, say researchers, who project that cases will rise to more than 36,000 by 2030.

The disease is slightly more common in men than in women and tends to strike in midlife, between the ages of 40 and 60.

Here's what to know.

What is ALS?

It affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, causing loss of muscle control and getting worse over time.

ALS causes nerve cells in the upper and lower parts of the body to stop working and die. Nerves no longer trigger specific muscles, eventually leading to paralysis. People with ALS may develop problems with mobility, speaking, swallowing and breathing.

The exact cause of the disease is unknown, and Mayo Clinic experts said a small number of cases are inherited.

It's called Lou Gehrig's disease after the Hall of Fame New York Yankees player. Gehrig was diagnosed with ALS in 1939 on his 36th birthday, died in 1941 and was the face of ALS for decades.

What are some signs of ALS?

Experts say the first symptoms are often subtle. The disease may begin with muscle twitching and weakness in an arm or leg.

Over time, muscles stop acting and reacting correctly, said experts at University of California San Francisco Health. People may lose strength and coordination in their arms and legs; feet and ankles may become weak; and muscles in the arms, shoulders and tongue may cramp or twitch. Swallowing and speaking may become difficult and fatigue may set in.

The ability to think, see, hear, smell, taste and touch are usually not affected, UCSF experts said.

Eventually, muscles used for breathing may become paralyzed. Patients may be unable to swallow and inhale food or saliva. Most people with ALS die of respiratory failure.

How is ALS diagnosed and treated?

The disease is difficult to diagnose because there's no test or procedure to confirm it. Generally, doctors will perform a physical exam, lab tests and imaging of the brain and spinal cord.

A doctor may interpret certain things as signs of ALS, including an unusual flexing of the toes, diminished fine motor coordination, painful muscle cramps, twitching and spasticity, a type of stiffness causing jerky movements.

There's no known cure for ALS, but the drug riluzole has been approved for treatment. According to the Mayo Clinic, it may extend survival in the early stages of the disease or extend the time until a breathing tube is needed.

Another much-debated drug, Relyvrio, was pulled from the U.S. market by Amylyx Pharmaceuticals in 2024. Its development had been financed, in part, by the ALS Association, the major beneficiary of the 2014 " ice bucket challenge " viral phenomenon.

Other medications are sometimes prescribed to help control symptoms.

Choking is common as ALS progresses, so patients may need feeding tubes. People may also use braces, wheelchairs, speech synthesizers or computer-based communication systems.

After the onset of the disease, experts say patients may survive from two years to a decade. Most people live from two to five years after symptoms develop, and about a fifth live more than five years after they are diagnosed.

Since the House of Windsor was founded in 1917, the royal family's private lives have often drawn headlines

Some notable scandals include King Edward VIII's abdication, Princess Margaret's affair and divorce and a wave of royal marriages ending in the 1990s

In February 2026, ex-Prince Andrew was arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office, following his alleged relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein

Ex-Prince Andrew was arrested on Feb. 19 on suspicion of misconduct in public office. The development is the latest in a long line of high-profile headlines involving the British royal family.

Over the last century, the House of Windsor has repeatedly seen private matters play out publicly. King Edward VIII stunned the world when he abdicated the British throne to marry American divorcĂ©e Wallis Simpson in 1936, and a series of royal divorces — including that of Princess Diana and King Charles — dominated the news cycles in the 1990s.

In recent decades, Andrew has emerged as one of the royal family's most controversial figures. In 2019, he was accused of sexual abuse by one of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein's alleged sex trafficking victims.

Though he denied the allegations, Andrew was stripped of his royal patronages and titles by 2025.

Here are the most notable royal family scandals the House of Windsor has had to navigate over the years.

Edward had been king for less than a year when he announced that he was leaving the throne to marry Simpson. His younger brother, King George VI (who was Queen Elizabeth's father), then acceded to the throne.

"I have found it impossible to carry the heavy burden of responsibility and to discharge my duties as king as I would wish to do without the help and support of the woman I love," Edward — who was named Duke of Windsor and allowed to keep his title of His Royal Highness — said on the radio the day after signing his abdication papers in December 1936.

The following year, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor were married. Brides reported that no royal family members attended the wedding and that Simpson was never granted the title of Her Royal Highness, despite Edward's wishes.

Both Princess Margaret and Antony Armstrong-Jones were accused of infidelity throughout their 18-year-long marriage. However, it was the Countess of Snowdon's infamous, multi-year affair with British garden designer Roddy Llewellyn that captured global attention.

In 1976, photographs of Princess Margaret and Llewellyn made front-page news and led to her announcing her separation from Armstrong-Jones months later. The former couple, who welcomed two children, finalized their divorce two years later. According to TIME, it marked the first royal marriage in the immediate family to end in 400 years.

In recent years, Andrew has faced a large amount of scrutiny. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip's son was first embroiled in controversy in 2010, when his alleged connection to Epstein became public.

He was named in a civil suit against the late financier and convicted sex offender in 2015, in which a woman named Virginia Giuffre accused him of sexually assaulting her three times when she was 17.

He stepped back from his public role following his infamous BBC interview in November 2019, in which he discussed his relationship with Epstein, who had died by suicide months earlier. Andrew denied ever meeting Guiffre, who filed a lawsuit against the ex-prince in 2021. She later died by suicide in April 2025.

By 2022, Queen Elizabeth had stripped Andrew of all his military affiliations. King Charles followed suit three years later, renouncing his royal titles and honors, including the title of prince.

Though he was arrested in February 2026 on suspicion of misconduct in public office and could face life in prison, he has yet to be charged with a crime.

The '90s were a turbulent time for the royals' marriages. Princess Margaret's historic separation years earlier paved the way for Princess Anne, Prince Charles and then-Prince Andrew to also leave their marriages. The three siblings' mother, Queen Elizabeth, described 1992 as "annus horribilis."

That year, Andrew separated from his wife of six years, Sarah Ferguson. The former Duke of York remained close to his ex-wife, with whom he shares two children. They continued to live together for years even after their divorce was finalized in 1994.

Princess Anne separated from her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips, in 1989 and finalized their divorce in 1992. It was later revealed that they had both been unfaithful, and Anne went on to marry her husband, Timothy Laurence.

That same year, Diana and Charles announced their separation after both were unfaithful during their 14 years of marriage. In 1995, they finalized their divorce.

Diana tragically died in a car accident in 1997, and Charles married the future Queen Camilla in 2005.

They were officially crowned King and Queen consort in May 2023, following Queen Elizabeth's death in 2022.

The years between Diana and Charles' separation and divorce were marked by frequent tabloid coverage — starting with the infamous "tampongate" in January 1993.

Transcripts of a 1989 six-minute phone conversation between Charles and Camilla were published by the U.K. paper The People, per The Sunday Mirror. In it, Charles joked about wanting to be reincarnated as a Tampax tampon so he could "live inside" Camilla's trousers. The details of how the publication received the transcript remain unclear.

In 1994, the now-king publicly admitted to having been unfaithful to Diana in a televised interview with ITV, per The New York Times. He claimed that his infidelity began after their marriage "became irretrievably broken down."

The following year, he went public with Camilla when they attended a high-profile party together.
