Abigail Breslin says her Little Miss Sunshine performance has followed her into adulthood — so much so that she had to ban "Super Freak" from her wedding playlist.

The cast of the film — including Breslin and costars Paul Dano, Greg Kinnear and Toni Collette — caught up with PEOPLE at the Sundance Film Festival on Jan. 28 ahead of a special screening of the movie for its upcoming 20th anniversary.

While reminiscing on one of the final scenes of the movie, where Breslin's Olive dances to Rick James' "Super Freak" during a pageant, the 29-year-old actress admits she doesn't fully "remember" filming the dance — despite its lasting presence in her life.

In fact, when Breslin got married to her husband, Ira Kunyansky, in 2023, she had to "specifically tell our DJ" not to play the '80s hit.

"I had obnoxious friends who were going to go up and be like, 'play "Super Freak" we want to see if she will do it,'" she jokes. "And so it was like, no offense, love the song, appreciate it for what it is, but no."

She went on to explain that the song has become a joke among her friends, so she knew she had to preemptively warn her DJ about their antics.

"My friend had a fashion show, and he asked me to be in it. Why? I had no idea," she recalls. "But, he had all his friends be models in it, and I got up to do it, and they were playing 'Super Freak.' He thought it was the most hilarious thing."

While the song has followed Breslin throughout the last two decades, the cast reveals that the funky track wasn't the original choice for music in the scene.

They tell PEOPLE the scene was actually set to "Gimme All Your Lovin'" by ZZ Top, but they couldn't get the rights to the song.

Breslin says they used the ZZ Top song while they "were filming" the scene, and it wasn't until post-production that they swapped the song out.

"They changed it right before, right when they were finishing the edit, they changed it," Breslin shares.

At just 10 years old, Breslin received a Best Supporting Actress nomination at the Oscars for her role in the dramedy. The late Alan Arkin won Best Supporting Actor for his performance as Grandpa Edwin Hoover. Screenwriter Michael Arndt also won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay.

Little Miss Sunshine is available to stream on Disney+ and Hulu.
