**Warning: Major *Wicked: For Good* spoilers ahead.**

*Wicked: For Good* is full of Easter eggs and hidden meanings — but one pivotal plot point hides in plain sight.

When Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) meet for the final time, they are interrupted by flying monkey Chistery, who hands Elphaba a patch of Fiyero's (Jonathan Bailey) Wizard's Guard uniform. "We've seen his face for the last time," Elphaba tells her friend of the man they both love.

Elphaba doesn't spend much time mourning Fiyero, quickly ushering Glinda into a closet after the friends sing the touching duet "For Good." Elphaba has a plan to let that farm girl Dorothy splash her with water and let the world believe she's melted away.

But that's all for show. The film concludes with Fiyero opening a trap door in the castle and revealing Elphaba is alive and well. "Fiyero?" Elphaba seems to ask as she looks upon him in Scarecrow form for the first time since she transformed the Winkie prince to save his life.

So did she not know Fiyero was a scarecrow now? And how did he know where to find her? *Wicked: For Good* director Jon M. Chu reveals to ** what audiences didn't see that fills in some of the gaps.

How 'Wicked: For Good' changed after first movie's success: 'We don't need any of that s---'

**: Was Elphaba expecting Fiyero to show up at the end?**

**JON M. CHU: **I won't say too much other than.... I mean.... It's important to know that I think there is correspondence to know that he's showing up there. Otherwise, why would she go down there?

**I just assumed Chistery told her in secret or something.**

Yeah, that piece of clothing has a note on it. We didn't want to do a close-up on that because it would've been too much too soon. We need, as an audience, to believe in the story that's being told.

**It sounds like Elphaba is unsure if it's Fiyero when he opens the trap door. Is that the case?**

I think she does know that he's alive, of course, and that he's become this thing. But I don't think she's seen who he is for sure until she looks at him there. It's a different idea of knowing that he's turned into the thing and then seeing him. And I think maybe there's a little bit of guilt of "Did I do the right thing?" And then he's reassuring her like, "You saved my life."

**And then she repeats his words to him about beauty.**

And they took their time with that moment. I mean, that's all them. I didn't know how quick or slow it should be. They just.... This is how naturally two people...the uncomfortable silence, the exploration of each other. It was just beautiful to experience.

**What should we read into them walking off into that desolate desert?**

We explored versions of that desert that were a lot darker and scarier — like walking into your fears. But I think it is not dead space, it's possibility. No one has explored that horizon because everyone's too scared. So I wanted it to feel like they get to walk off into the sunset and determine what's next for themselves. I said, "Let's put sparkles in that sand!"
