- *Wicked: For Good* director Jon M. Chu breaks down what happens to Fiyero and Elphaba at the end of his blockbuster sequel.

- The filmmaker reveals what we should take from Glinda's magical final moment.

- EW answers if there is an end-credit scene at the conclusion of the movie.

**Have you been changed for good? If not, fair warning, there are massive *Wicked: For Good* spoilers ahead.**

The fiirst *Wicked* film set our cast of Ozians off on drastically different paths, Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) forced into the shadows as she battles the propaganda campaign instigated by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum) and Madame Morrible (Michelle Yeoh), who have elevated Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) into positions of power as foils to "the Wicked Witch."

The sequel, *Wicked: For Good* (now in theaters), forgoes what director Jon M. Chu describes to ** as the "fun and the dance" of the first film as the characters evolve past their youthful positivity to see Oz for all its flaws...and possibilities.

Throughout *For Good*, "every character has to ask a question about reality at some point — and make a choice of which reality they're going to choose. [Ethan Slater's] Boq chooses a reality of hate as a community, and Glinda chooses a reality that she may never be good," says the director. "I think it's this idea that we're both good and wicked. We're all of these things, and every day we make a choice about which one we're going to be."

So what happens to them all? Here's how *Wicked: For Good* ends, with insights from Chu.

What is in that desert land beyond Oz that Elphaba and Fiyero escape to?

After faking her melting, Elphaba is reunited with Fiyero (in Scarecrow form, Elphaba having transformed him to save his life after the Wizard's guards beat him). With both of them presumed dead, the couple escapes to a desert land beyond Oz. The scene is foreshadowed earlier in the film, during the "No Place Like Home" sequence with Dulcibear, when Elphaba has a vision of two figures walking through the wasteland.

In Frank L. Baum's 1900 book* The Wonderful Wizard of Oz*, the desolate environment is described as the Deadly Desert. And Chu confirms to EW that the *Wicked: For Good* team did explore "versions of that desert that were a lot darker and scarier — like walking into your fears."

But, ultimately, the director felt that the desert "is not dead space, it's possibility. No one has explored that horizon because everyone's too scared."

"Let's put sparkles in that sand!" Chu says of visually representing that sense of hope.

Does Elphaba gift Glinda magic abilities?

Reeling from what she believes to be the death of her best friend, Glinda returns to the Emerald City and reveals that Elphaba had a green bottle keepsake from her mother that indicates the Wizard is actually the father of the "Wicked Witch." Stunned, he's convinced to vacate his position and return home in his hot air balloon.

Next, Glinda has the flying monkeys arrest and imprison Madame Morrible, slyly quoting the former professor's own words from the first film back to her: "You do not have what it takes. I hope you prove me wrong. I doubt you will."

With that, Glinda sets out to inform the Oz communities of Elphaba's death and the Wizard's departure, which is how we first found the "Good Witch" at the start of the first *Wicked* film. In front of Munchkinland, Glinda invites the Animals back into society (including Doctor Dillamond, who is seen returning to his classroom) and offers herself up as a new, benevolent leader of Oz.

How 'Wicked: For Good' changed after first movie's success: 'We don't need any of that s---'

Eventually back at the Emerald City, Glinda takes the Grimmerie — gifted to her by Elphaba just before her "melting" — back to the tower where Elphaba first took flight on her broom. Glinda begins a reprise of "For Good," and we see Elphaba, in the desert, turn back and look toward Oz, joining her friend in song. She smiles as the Grimmerie, which had previously opened and glowed only for her, comes to life for Glinda.

So does that mean Elphaba transferred her powers to Glinda? Or did Glinda's good deeds unlock her own magic within?

"Elphaba giving Glinda the book is her saying 'You know the power that you have, and you know the truth,'" Chu says. "But there's no answer at the end of this movie, it's a challenge: 'What are you going to be?' We don't know what Glinda does, we just know the possibilities are beautiful."

Is there a Wicked: For Good end credit scene?

To put it as bluntly as Madame Morrible would, no. The movie concludes its 2 hours and 17 minutes with the end of that "For Good" reprise, Elphaba and Fieyro walking off into the unknown, and Glinda's face basking in the glow of the Grimmerie.**
