Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey kissed too fiercely (and perhaps held each other too tight) in a cut *Wicked: For Good* scene.

The musical film's screenwriter, Dana Fox, revealed in a new interview that the two stars filmed a kiss scene that was ultimately scrapped because it was "too passionate" and didn't make sense for their engaged-yet-estranged characters, Glinda and Fiyero, since Fiyero left her for Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) soon after.

"There was a scene between Fiyero and Glinda that we cut in which they kissed," Fox told Deadline. "It was romantic and beautiful, but a little too passionate. Seeing that made it too hard to watch him make the choice he makes to be with Elphaba, and made it too hard to make it okay that Elphaba ran off with him. It was too real that he and Glinda were actually feeling something together."

Fox added that the kiss scene was "cut for exactly the right reasons," even though she admitted that the actors' performances were powerful.

"It was like a feeling that he really did love her, which he does care about Glinda a lot, don't get me wrong," the screenwriter explained. "But he likes her in a different way. But this scene was too romantic, so it was like, 'Oh, we can't know that because then our brains will explode when he doesn't choose her in the end. And then we'll hate Elphaba, Glinda, and Fiyero.' So, I think it was a good cut because it was too adorable that you simply couldn't handle it."

'Wicked: For Good' ending explained: It was almost 'a lot darker and scarier,' says director

While Fiyero and Glinda dated and fell in love in last year's first *Wicked *movie, the second half of the story (now playing in theaters) finds Fiyero leaning in to his newfound passion for her best friend, Elphaba. The love triangle drama all culminates on Fiyero and Glinda's wedding day, when Elphaba returns to the Emerald City to release all the animals imprisoned by the Wizard (Jeff Goldblum), inadvertently interrupting their ceremony. But then Fiyero chooses to leave with Elphaba, breaking Glinda's heart.

While Elphaba and Fiyero don't exactly get their "happily ever after" ending, as Elphaba transformed Fiyero into a scarecrow to save his life from the guards, they do end up together and literally walk off into the sunset. With both of them presumed dead publicly, the couple escapes to a desert wasteland beyond Oz, described in Frank L. Baum's 1900 book* The Wonderful Wizard of Oz *as the Deadly Desert.

Director Jon M. Chu previously told ** that the *Wicked: For Good* team did explore "versions of that desert that were a lot darker and scarier — like walking into your fears."

But, ultimately, the director felt that the desert "is not dead space, it's possibility. No one has explored that horizon because everyone's too scared."

"Let's put sparkles in that sand!" Chu says of visually representing that sense of hope.

Elphaba and Fiyero are seeing that desert through different eyes.
