- *Landman *season 2 premiered on Paramount+ on Sunday, Nov. 16.
- Oscar nominee Sam Elliott joins the cast as T.L. Norris.
- T.L. is revealed to be the father of Tommy Norris (Billy Bob Thornton).
Taylor Sheridan's work ethic is nothing short of inspiring, considering he currently has three original shows airing simultaneously on Paramount+. Among them is *Landman*, a drama focused on the West Texas oil industry.
Season 2, which premiered on Nov. 16, sees Billy Bob Thornton reprise his role as Tommy Norris, a seasoned landman who's now the head of M-Tex Oil. This new season also introduces several new characters to the oil fields, including Sam Elliott's T.L.
Here's everything you need to know about the Oscar nominee's character, T.L., in *Landman* season 2.

In April 2025, Deadline reported that Elliott was joining *Landman *season 2, but details about his role were kept under wraps at the time. In the months leading up to the season 2 premiere, fans learned that his character is named T.L., and he just so happens to be Tommy's father.

T.L.'s brief introduction to *Landman *comes late in the season 2 premiere, "Death and a Sunset." The scene finds T.L. sitting in his wheelchair, watching the sunset outside the Prairie View assisted living facility.
One of the employees, Denise, approaches T.L. to tell him it's time for dinner, and boy, do we feel for her. T.L. snaps at her with a cranky response full of expletives, proving he's every bit as grumpy as his son, Tommy. T.L.'s stubbornness is also on full display; when Denise tries to wheel him inside, he gets up and tells her she is "ruining" the sunset.
Denise heads inside as another employee, Hank, arrives to manage the situation. As he coaxes T.L. back into his wheelchair, Hank delivers some devastating news: "Dorothy passed," he says as T.L. starts to cry. Hank explains that her Memory Care facility called and let them know that Dorothy "just didn't wake up" from her afternoon nap.

"I recommend you find a way to die quick, Hank. This dying a little bit every day is…," T.L. says, trailing off, too worn down to finish. Hank tells T.L. that Dorothy is "in a better place" and that T.L. will "see her again" one day. T.L. replies bitterly, "If I do, that means I'm in hell, too."
Later, after that explosive family dinner that closes the episode, Tommy learns about Dorothy's death. When Angela (Ali Larter) asks who died, Tommy simply says, "My mother."
We don't know much about about T.L. in *Landman *season 2, but the premiere hints that he and Tommy will try to reconnect and navigate their grief together. Whether it goes well remains to be seen, but based on Tommy's casual reaction to his mom's death, it seems their relationship was shaky — and there's a good chance his dynamic with T.L. is just as fragile.
How was Sam Elliott cast as T.L. in *Landman *season 2?

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, the Elliott revealed that he hasn't worked since *1883*. His long-awaited return to the screen in *Landman *season 2 came directly from Sheridan, who personally convinced him to step back onto a set after his lengthy hiatus.
"I hadn't worked for a while since *1883* — a long time. Life took me in a different direction for a while," Elliott shared. "I ended up on the phone with [Taylor], and he said, 'What are you up to?' And I said, 'Nothing, man, I haven't been doing anything since we worked together.' And he said, 'Well, I'm about to put your ass back to work.' And that's how it came to be."
Thornton chimed in, admitting that he became emotional when he learned Elliott would be playing his father on *Landman*. "That's the perfect person because we have a similar vibe and know each other," he told the outlet. "When Taylor told me, I told my wife. I was *so* excited, started crying, and she might have a little bit too."
He added that he got emotional because he just "knew it was right."
Elliott and Thornton go *way* back. The actors have worked together twice, sharing the screen in the classic Western *Tombstone *(1993) and on Sheridan's *Yellowstone *prequel miniseries, *1883* (2021).
"I can only say this: I've known Sam longer than anybody in the cast," Thornton previously told* *. "Sam and I go back to somewhere in the mid-to-late-'80s and we've done two things together before this and both of those things, it was only two scenes in each one. To be able to be around him longer on a more regular basis on the set, it's just been a joy for me because I love that man. He's been a mentor and a friend and just a hero of mine always."**
