The New England Patriots just keep winning.
The Patriots, thanks to a huge fourth-down stop and a massive day from TreVeyon Henderson, escaped Raymond James Stadium with a 28-23 win over Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. That marked their seventh straight win and pushed them to 8-2 on the season. And, thanks to the Buffalo Bills' loss elsewhere, they now hold a two-game lead in the division.
While the stop late sealed the win — the Patriots swallowed up Mayfield on fourth down in scoring position inside the two-minute warning — it was Henderson that dominated all day for New England. He erupted for a 69-yard touchdown run after that stop for good measure, which officially put it out of reach.

Henderson finished with a career-high 147 yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries. The former Ohio State star, who the Patriots took in the second round of the draft earlier this spring, had just one rushing touchdown so far this season before Sunday.
Drake Maye and Mayfield were dealing early, and traded off big touchdown passes to open the game on Sunday afternoon. Mayfield went first, finding Emeka Egbuka for a 21-yard score on their first drive of the game. Maye finally responded at the end of the period. He dumped a short ball off to Kyle Williams, who then sprinted 72 yards down the sidelines to get New England on the board.

But it was their last-second touchdown before halftime that was easily the most impressive. After giving up a field goal, Stefon Diggs somehow managed to get both of his feet down in the corner of the end zone on fourth down with no time left on the clock. That put them up by four points at the break.
Diggs ended up bailing the Patriots out on that drive, too. Maye tried to run a sneak on first down, and was stuffed immediately. The Patriots then let more than 90 seconds run off the clock with little urgency, since the Buccaneers were out of timeouts in the half.

Then not even a minute into the second half, Henderson broke through the line of scrimmage almost completely untouched before rattling off a 55-yard touchdown run. That swing, which took place over just a 50-second span, completely flipped the game.

But that's when the Buccaneers' comeback started. Mayfield marched the team down the field on a long 92-yard drive capped by a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tez Johnson late in the third quarter to keep them within a possession.
Maye and the Patriots nearly put the game away late in the fourth quarter, too, thanks largely to a 54-yard completion to Mack Hollins. But Maye's first mistake of the afternoon came just a few plays later. He tried to find Hollins again on third down in the end zone, but he ended up throwing into double coverage after scrambling to the outside — which Tykee Smith took full advantage of.

But, thanks to the fourth down stop and Henderson's second score, the Buccaneers' comeback just never came to fruition. They scored one last touchdown in garbage time, when Mayfield found Johnson for an 11-yard score. The Patriots just ran out the clock after that to complete the five-point win.
Mayfield went 28-43 for 273 yards with three touchdowns in the loss for Tampa Bay, which was its second in three games. Sean Tucker led them on the ground with 53 rushing yards on nine carries. Egbuka finished with 115 yards and score on six catches.
Maye finished throwing 16-of-31 for 270 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the win. Hollins had 106 yards on six catches, too. The Patriots will host the New York Jets next week, where they'll look to pick up an eighth consecutive win.
If it wasn't clear entering Sunday's matchup, the Patriots are undoubtedly in the driver's seat in the AFC East. The team that managed just four in each of the last two seasons is long gone.
