The 40-Year-Old-Virgin (2005)

Steve Carell as Andy Stitzer in 'The 40-Year-Old Virgin'. Suzanne Hanover/Universal
Judd Apatow's first cinematic directing project had the potential to fail on an epic scale. *The 40-Year-Old Virgin* — a movie about Andy Stitzer (Steve Carell), a retail employee whose co-workers decide to take charge of his love life after learning he never lost his virginity — could have been callous, shallow, and deeply unfunny. But while Apatow has no problem dabbling in broad comedy (see: the waxing scene), he refrains from punching down, presenting Andy as a man who is afraid to grow up, but enthusiastic about trying.
The cast is excellent from front to back, but it's Carell's earnest performance of Andy that made the film an instant classic. EW's critic at the time writes, "*The 40-Year-Old Virgin* is buoyantly clever and amusing, a comedy of horny embarrassment that has the inspiration to present a middle-aged virgin's dilemma as a projection of all our romantic anxieties." *—Ilana Gordon*

Tom Hanks as Charlie Wilson in 'Charlie Wilson's War'. Universal Pictures
Mike Nichols put a bow on his illustrious directing career in 2007 with *Charlie Wilson's War*, a biographical comedy about Texas Congressman Charlie Wilson (Tom Hanks). A legislator more known for his partying than his policy, Wilson makes it his mission to covertly organize artillery support for Afghan rebels fighting the Soviet Union.
Aaron Sorkin wrote the script, which is set in 1980 during the Soviet-Afghan War, and Nichols packs his project with A-list talent, including Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Hanks takes a detour from his traditional nice guy roles to sleaze it up as the hard-drinking, sweet-talking Wilson, and that alone is worth a watch. *—I.G.*

During the summer of 1992, Richard Linklater gathered all the up-and-coming talent in young Hollywood and shipped them off to Texas to make a film about the last day of the 1976 school year. *Dazed and Confused *was the vehicle that launched Matthew McConaughey's career, but truthfully, his performance would have been lost without the movie's strong, mostly undiscovered ensemble.
Linklater used *Dazed and Confused *to continue developing his signature style — as seen in his first feature, *Slacker* (1990) — for making naturalistic movies crammed with contemporary dialogue, some of which was improvised by his cast. The film flopped upon release, but Linklater's ability to capture the nostalgia and hopefulness of this particular life period earned *Dazed and Confused* the third slot on EW's list of the 50 best high school movies. *—I.G.*

Ryan Reynolds as Will Hayes and Abigail Breslin as Maya Hayes in 'Definitely, Maybe'.
Andy Schwartz/Universal/Courtesy Everett Collection
*Definitely, Maybe* is the story of a man finding his soulmate, but the movie's strength lies in how well it rounds out the women from his past. Ryan Reynolds stars as Will Hayes, a young dad trying to figure out how to explain his divorce to his daughter, Maya (Abigail Breslin). Riffing on *How I Met Your Mother*, which premiered three years earlier, Will tells Maya the story of how he met her mom — with some names and details changed.
Maya's quest to identify her mother in the story helps Will better understand his romantic past, and gives them both insight into where love is really leading him. The film distinguishes itself from the average rom-com thanks to the performances of Will's past loves, played by Rachel Weisz, Elizabeth Banks, and Isla Fisher. *—I.G.*

Michael B. Jordan as Oscar Grant III and Kevin Durand as Officer Caruso in 'Fruitvale Station'.
Ron Koeberer/TWC
*Fruitvale Station*, Ryan Coogler's feature directorial debut, also represents the beginning of his creative partnership with Michael B. Jordan. The duo's onscreen legacy — which includes the *Creed* and *Black Panther *franchises, and 2025's *Sinners* — begins on Dec. 31, 2008, in an Oakland train station. Jordan plays Oscar Grant III, a 22-year-old father who was killed by BART Police on New Year's Day 2009, after defending himself in a fight on a train; the film chronicles the last day of his life.
Grant's real-life death was one of the many instances of police brutality that precipitated the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement, and the film premiered the same year BLM was founded. Coogler's work helped further the cause, with EW's review stating, "He puts us in touch with the full, wrenching humanity — the moral horror — of the crime as if we were seeing it for the first time." *—I.G.***** Where to watch *Fruitvale Station*: Starz**

Constance Wu as Destiny in 'Hustlers'. STX Entertainment
The 2008 financial crisis does not make for a sexy subject, but writer-director Lorene Scafaria's adaptation of a 2015 *New York Magazine* article about a group of strippers who drugged and robbed stock traders turned the crash into the year's sultriest criminal comedy. Led by Ramona (Jennifer Lopez), a veteran stripper who folds men like origami, the crew's scheme is explained when a journalist (Julia Stiles) tracks down one of Ramona's former acolytes (Constance Wu) in the hopes of extracting the story.
Lopez is mesmerizing as Ramona, a force of a woman who sees her financial revenge scheme as a modern-day Robin Hood story. EW's critic writes, "Lopez (who seems to hold the center of every scene she's in) and Wu bring a soulfulness and desperation to their roles that defy easy profiling." *—I.G.*

Adrien Brody as Jack Driscoll in 'King Kong'. Universal/Everett
The Eighth Wonder of the World comes alive as never before in Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 version of* King Kong*. Set during the Great Depression, the 2005 adaptation stars Jack Black as a filmmaker with duplicitous intentions, Naomi Watts as his unwitting leading lady, and Adrien Brody as the screenwriter who falls in love with her.
Still at the height of his motion capture era, Andy Serkis — who also portrayed Gollum in *The Lord of the Rings* — endows Kong with a depth and sensitivity not expected from the world's most feared gorilla. The eighth cinematic addition to the *King Kong* universe, a critic writing for EW calls it a "very human tale of compassion, greed, loss, bravery, creativity, foolishness, and love." *—I.G.*

Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Joe in 'Looper'.
Alan Markfield/TriStar Pictures/Everett
This futuristic sci-fi thriller from writer-director Rian Johnson is a mind-bender in the best of ways. Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is an assassin working for an innovative crime syndicate that uses time travel to avoid detection by sending their targets into the past (Joe's present) to be killed. When killers such as Joe outlive their usefulness, the company sends their future selves back into the present to be killed by their younger selves.
Such is the predicament for Joe, when his older self (Bruce Willis) tries to avoid this fate. It's a heady concept, but Johnson develops the film's world and its unique set of rules in such a detailed, entertaining fashion that you won't be left frustrated. *—Kevin Jacobsen*

Idris Elba as Nelson Mandela in 'Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom'.
Keith Bernstein
It's impossible for anyone to fully capture Nelson Mandela's impact, and the biggest issue in *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom* is that the film tried. Released only a few months before the activist's death at the age of 95 in December of 2013, *Mandela *is a comprehensive remembering of his story, starting with his political awakening and incarceration, and ending with his rise to power as South Africa's president in a postapartheid world.
Idris Elba doesn't look like Mandela, but he doesn't need to: His towering performance captures the former president's spirit and convictions. Released around the same time as *12 Years a Slave*, *Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom *doesn't pack the same emotional punch, but it remains an important biography of a once-in-a-lifetime leader. *—I.G.*

Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in 'Mission: Impossible'.
Ethan Hunt is America's answer to James Bond. In the '60s and '70s, CBS series *Mission: Impossible* followed U.S. undercover officers as they engaged in top-secret operations. Under Brian De Palma's cinematic direction, the spy work goes high-tech and high impact. Tom Cruise stars as Ethan Hunt, a member of the Impossible Missions Force, or IMF, whose mission is compromised when he is suspected of being an agency mole.
"*Mission: Impossible* is structured as a Rubik's Cube that keeps on twisting," writes EW's critic. The film is also the gift that keeps on giving: There are eight movies in the franchise, although *Mission Impossible: Final Reckoning* (2025) is allegedly Cruise's last. But, as in all *M:I *movies, it's possible this is just a misdirection and the IMF's work will continue with another lead agent. Either way, this streaming opportunity will self-destruct in five seconds. *—I.G.*

We have *Night of the Living Dead* to thank for our modern idea of zombies and the many tropes attached to the subgenre. Legendary director George Romero was inspired by the 1954 novel *I Am Legend* for this independent horror classic, which centers the action on a farmhouse overrun by ravenous, undead "ghouls." The film's allusions to then-current events (as EW's critic writes, "flesh-eating zombies as a Vietnam-era metaphor for America devouring itself") just make it all the more resonant. *—K.J.*

When destiny has a sense of humor, we call it serendipity, which also happens to be the title of one of 2001's most beloved romantic comedies. A whirlwind New York love story, *Serendipity* stars Kate Beckinsale and John Cusack as two young city dwellers who meet and enjoy a magical night — only to decide to let fate control whether they end up together. As the years pass and their life paths diverge, it seems destiny has other plans for the would-be lovers, but New York City and a series of fortunate events may end up reuniting the pair after all.

Tom Holland's third solo Spider-Man movie, *Spider-Man: No Way Home*, ties up some loose ends and touches hearts while doing it. The film's actors and production team were vigilant about keeping spoilers under wraps, and almost five years later, it's still worth protecting some of the movie's most special moments. Suffice it to say that a number of characters return, fans and critics loved the film, and Holland continues to take impeccable care of Peter Parker during his Marvel tour of duty. The tragic 2023 implosion of the Titan submersible proves, yet again, that the allure of the *Titanic* cannot be denied. The same can be said for James Cameron's cinematic adaptation of the infamous sinking, a three-hour epic that layers a fictional love story on top of a historical catastrophe, tracing the ship's trajectory from world-class vessel to its final resting place at the bottom of the North Atlantic.
Enriched by real-life characters and true accounts, Cameron's *Titanic* made Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet household names, revolutionized modern filmmaking, and launched a banger of a Céline Dion ballad. A tale of love and loss, classism and delusion, *Titanic* is more than worthy of the 11 Academy Awards it took home. The "Ship of Dreams" may never have made it to shore, but the film commemorating its doomed voyage deserves to be watched by any self-respecting romance fan.* —I.G.*
