Aaron Rodgers won't need surgery for the fractured wrist he suffered on his non-throwing hand late in the second quarter of last week's 34-12 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin told reporters Tuesday.

"Really, it's just about bracing it and securing it for his comfort and safety, and then it's about how functional he is," said Tomlin, who didn't commit to a starting quarterback Tuesday for the 6-4 Steelers' Week 12 road game against the 7-3 Chicago Bears.

Rodgers is not expected to practice Wednesday. He's pushing to play Sunday in Chicago, although Tomlin emphasized the importance of stabilizing the 41-year-old signal-caller's wrist, as well as the necessity of making sure Rodgers is safe to protect himself on falls and, of course, that he's effective playing the position.

Tomlin says Rodgers managing the pain doesn't seem to be an issue, as the four-time NFL MVP wanted to go back in the game this past Sunday after going out with his left wrist injury.

"I think his experience really kind of aids in that he's the type of guy and has the type of profile that doesn't require a lot of physical work in an effort to be ready to play, and that's helpful," Tomlin said.

Tomlin noted that Friday will be a big day in terms of assessing Rodgers' outlook for the weekend. In the meantime, backup Mason Rudolph — who replaced Rodgers against the Bengals — and rookie Will Howard will get more work in practice.

Tomlin was asked if he has the sense that Rodgers is even more eager to play Sunday given that the Steelers are facing off against the Bears, whom he dominated during his 18-season run with the Green Bay Packers.

"Aaron always wants to play," Tomlin said. "Opponent has nothing to do with it. It's his love affair with the game of football."

While Tomlin couldn't confirm the exact play Rodgers sustained his injury, Rodgers notably landed on his left wrist and hand when he was tackled on second-and-goal near the end of the first half against the Bengals. He had thrown the ball away but still took a hit that brought him to the ground.

Following a timeout, he stayed in for one more play before Chris Boswell made a 25-yard field goal to give the Steelers a 10-6 lead at intermission.

Rudolph completed 12 of his 16 passing attempts for 127 yards, five of which came on a passing touchdown to running back Kenneth Gainwell in the fourth quarter. The Steelers also scored a pair of defensive touchdowns in the second half: one from a pick-6 and the other on a scoop-and-score.

"Can't say enough about Mason Rudolph," Tomlin said Tuesday. "Although we're used to it, it's still appreciated. He's proven over his time here that he's capable of coming in and playing winning football for us, and that's no small task."

Rudolph has started 14 games in his career for the Steelers, including one in the playoffs during the 2023 season, in which he helped Pittsburgh make the postseason down the stretch.

"When you're preparing during the course of the week as a backup, you have a limited number of reps," Tomlin continued.

"Usually the guts of the plan are geared toward the specific talents of the starters, and so you may get some reps, but it might not be quote unquote 'plays that are perfectly in your wheelhouse.' He's always found a way to manage those challenges, to remain confident for that confidence to ooze out of him and be a catalyst for a collective performance, and we got that."
