Jennifer Lawrence is already a four-time Oscar nominee, a winner for *Silver Linings Playbook*. And she's in the awards conversation again for her bold performance in Lynne Ramsay's *Die My Love*, where she plays Grace, a mother with postpartum depression made worse by her loneliness and yearning to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jackson, played by Robert Pattinson.

On **'s *The Awardist* podcast, the actress says she had no problem understanding her character, and outside of having postpartum depression after the birth of her second child, she "didn't relate to any" of Grace's descent into madness and an eventual breakdown, "a huge relief," Lawrence admits.

"The thing that struck me the most about Grace was that she just didn't have any veneer," she says. "There was just nothing false, and there was no room for anything false. And so none of it was performative. It all just felt very straightforward, just very frank."

Grace moves from New York to Montana with Jackson into his late uncle's house. They are a passionate couple who can't keep their hands off each other. But once she has the baby, and after his job takes him away for long stretches, their relationship changes — and leads him to other women.

"I always look for the most provocative scenes in something," Pattinson says about his initial impressions of the story. "It's not the major element, but in this script, there were a couple of moments I thought were so funny. One is where [Grace is at her] absolute most intense, where almost any logical person would be like, okay, I need to leave this relationship right now. And he proposes to her afterwards. I think it's quite funny and not done in a tongue-in-cheek way at all. It's very straight, and it definitely felt like there was some leap to be found in the performance."

Martin Scorsese, who's a producer on the movie, first brought Ariana Harwicz's 2012 novel of the same name to Lawrence after reading it in his book club. Lawrence admits she thought it was "gonna be really hard to make into a movie because it's not very linear and it's not very literal. It's like very poetic and it's kind of all told from the characters' inner world and inner dialogue," she explains. "But I didn't wanna go back to Marty and be like, 'I don't see it,'" she says, laughing. "So I sat with it for a while."

On an emotional level, Lawrence likened Grace's journey to a different character of classic cinema, one she says is any actress' dream role. "It felt a lot like *A Woman Under the Influence*. If you could go inside Gena Rowlands' heart and mind [playing Mabel Longhetti in] that... All the pieces of it were there, it just took me a second to figure out how to fit them together."

While the *Hunger Games* and *Twilight* franchise veterans are used to big shoots with lots of moving parts, some of their biggest challenges here came from the babies playing their newborn, and the very vocal dog that Jackson brings home — which intentionally had to bark *a lot* to annoy Grace and contribute to her madness. Turns out a lot of the chatter wasn't inserted in post-production but was happening live on set.**

"That dog annoyed the s--- out me," Lawrence matter-of-factly states, eliciting a laugh from Pattinson, who has a theory. "I think one of the reasons the dog was barking so much is 'cause it was very upset by how much you were judging it. It was very nervous from day one."

"I'm more of a cat person," she replies.

But Pattinson insists it was "a sweet dog," that didn't have much to do but sit for long stretches of time, so they did script rewrites to accommodate the canine.**

"To accommodate the barking," Lawrence clarifies, adding that they also had to make some adjustments for the twins who played their baby because they "hated their car seat," she explains, "so we had to recalibrate a lot. Normally, you could just plop a baby in a car seat, and the twins were like, hell no, I hate that thing.'"
