Time changes people — but maybe not as much as it does in Wicked: For Good.

As the new musical movie sequel heads into its emotional final act, a mob of Ozians gather to cheer on a quartet of "Witch Hunters" — including a man made of tin.

Glinda (Ariana Grande) looks out into the crowd to see the Tin Man sing that he'll be "heartless" killing Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo). The "Good Witch" is understandably shocked by the sentiment — but is she also shocked because she realizes that the Tin Man is actually Boq (Ethan Slater)?

"I don't necessarily like to say exactly what it is... but yeah, in my mind, she knows it's Boq," Wicked: For Good director Jon M. Chu tells Entertainment Weekly. "I think she recognizes, she sees it in his eyes. I think there's also something she knows inherently and it makes her ask herself, 'What has become of this world that I knew?'"

Elphaba transforms Boq into the Tin Man to save his life after Nessarose (Marissa Bode) misreads the Grimmerie spell book while trying to cast a love spell on him. As he comes out of his mental haze following the incident, Nessa blames her sister for his new form. Now Boq has reason not only to fear but to hate the "Wicked Witch."

And while it's left a little more ambiguous if Glinda recognizes Boq during "March of the Witch Hunters," Chu says Boq definitely sees his unrequited love, whom he's held a torch for since Shiz.

"That moment he looks back up to her and then turns away, that is him saying he doesn't need her anymore — because he has a new family of hate that's stronger than love for him," the director says of Boq turning to the dark side. "That, to me, was a big moment."
