Anthony Hopkins has dismissed the idea that he and costar Jodie Foster feuded while making their 1991 movie *The Silence of the Lambs.*
"I met Jodie, and she was very nice," Hopkins said on a recent episode of the* Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard* podcast. "There's quotes that Jodie never spoke to me. That's not true. We were quite friendly. There's nothing spooky about it. That's publicly crap."
Hopkins wrote in *We Did OK, Kid: A Memoir*, which was released this month, that he and Foster mostly stayed away from each other until they finished filming, for the sake of their characters. His Hannibal Lecter was a cannibalistic murderer, while her Clarice Starling was an FBI agent in training looking to get information from him about another serial killer. She was supposed to be intimidated.
In his interview with Shepard, Hopkins noted that Foster seemed immediately struck by his performance.

"We did the first reading, and I knew how to play it," Hopkins said. "It was the first reading around a table in New York, of all places. So we finished the script and Kenny Utt, one of the producers, says, 'Holy Moses, Tony, what is that?' And Jodie said, 'You're scary.'"
He wrote much the same in his new book.
"We just flew right into it," recalled Hopkins, who won one the movie's five Oscars for his work. "I wanted to show what I could do, so I was as scary as I could be. You could have heard a pin drop in the room. A couple of seconds after I started to speak as Lecter, I saw Jodie grow tense."**

He also wrote that he and Foster had lunch on the last day of shooting the Jonathan Demme-directed movie.
At one point, he recalled, "Jodie put down her sandwich and said she had to confess something: she'd been scared of me."
Hopkins said the same was true for him.
"We had a big hug, and we both admitted to feeling a strange sense of distance during the shoot, due no doubt to the power of that script, which had us playing a cat-and-mouse game," Hopkins wrote of the Ted Tally-penned script adapted from Thomas Harris' book. "Since then, we've always greeted each other with great warmth."**
Along with a Best Actor Oscar for Hopkins, the box-office hit garnered trophies in the categories of Best Actress, Best Director, Best Writing, and Best Picture.**
