Tyler Hilton cherishes the relationship advice he once received from Robert Downey Jr.

Hilton, 41, celebrated his 10th wedding anniversary with wife Megan Park, 39, in October. The couple met while starring in the 2007 comedy-drama Charlie Bartlett, alongside Downey Jr.

While on set of the movie, the Marvel actor, 60, gave them a piece of relationship advice they still follow to this day.

"We've always tried to go no more than three weeks without seeing each other and that's helped a lot with work and stuff," Hilton tells PEOPLE at the "It's a Wonderful Lifetime" holiday event in New York City. "We've been together a long time and it's always been a lot of travel."

"We met on this movie called Charlie Bartlett with Robert Downey Jr., and he and his wife [Susan Downey] are the ones that told us, 'If you guys want to make this work, never go more than two or three weeks without seeing each other,' " the actor says.

Hilton and Park, an actress, tied the knot on October 10, 2015. They share two kids, daughter Winny and son Benny.

Speaking about their recent wedding anniversary, Hilton admits that he and Park didn't do much due to their busy schedules. However, when things settled down, they were able to celebrate the milestone with their family.

"We didn't get to [celebrate] because we were both working actually," the One Tree Hill alum says, noting that Park was directing the Amazon Prime series Sterling Point while he was "filming something" in Toronto at the time.

"We missed each other but we celebrated with the kids later," he says.

Hilton will next star in Thank God: Christmas at Keller Ranch, as part of Lifetime's "It's a Wonderful Lifetime" programming. The sweet flick also features Arielle Kebbel, and is inspired by Kane Brown and his wife Katelyn's hit 2022 song.

Hilton plays hockey player Wes Campbell, who suffers an injury shortly before Christmas. He seeks treatment at the Keller Ranch, where Kebbel's single mom and equine therapist Maggie Keller works.

The actor recalls undergoing "a lot of hockey practice" for his role. Ultimately, he says, "I think we sold it."

"When I got this movie I was like, 'Oh my gosh, I don't know how to play hockey at all.' So I got a bunch of my boys in Canada. We rented a hockey rink and I bought a bunch of hockey equipment at Canadian Tire. We just went out there on the rink and practiced and practiced," Hilton shares.

Thank God: Christmas at Keller Ranch premieres Dec. 13 at 8/7c on Lifetime.
