Christmas movies are an inherently beloved film genre, one shared among family and friends across the coziest time of the year. And one standout title among enduring holiday flicks is The Family Stone, the Thomas Bezucha-directed ensemble dramedy starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson and the late, great Diane Keaton. Twenty years since the 2005 film first premiered, The Family Stone has been an annual favorite for movie lovers, thanks to its mix of relatable familial chaos, Christmastime coziness and plenty of humor. (That messy strata snafu always earns some chuckles.)
And while the heartfelt holiday favorite has always wrenched out a few weepy tears, those yuletide rewatches will be even more poignant this year after the IRL loss of the cast matriarch, Keaton. (The Oscar-winning actress died in Santa Monica, California, on October 11, 2025, at age 79.)
Though — spoiler alert! — Keaton's character Sybil Stone passes away at the end of The Family Stone, her memory will reportedly live on in a sequel movie already in the works, writer-director Thomas Bezucha confirmed to CNN in November. "I've been haunted by the loss of Sybil for months now while I worked on it, and so this was a blow on a tender bruise already," the filmmaker said shortly after Keaton's passing. Mentally, I've been spending time in that house where I've been missing her for a while already."
It's still early days on the as-yet-untitled The Family Stone sequel, but here's everything we know so far about the much-anticipated follow-up film.

Is there a The Family Stone sequel?
Though The Family Stone 2 has not officially been greenlit (the original film was backed by 20th Century Fox), writer-director Thomas Bezucha is reportedly currently working on the script.

An official synopsis for The Family Stone 2 has not yet been released; however, Thomas Bezucha has publicly announced that the screenplay will honor the late Diane Keaton, who played Stone family matriarch Sybil.
The plot for the original The Family Stone follows the Christmas misadventures of the Stone clan as beloved eldest son Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings his high-strung girlfriend Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker, in a Golden Globe-nominated performance) to his family's New England home to spend the holidays and meet his parents (played by Diane Keaton and Craig T. Nelson) and siblings. The initial culture clash between the buttoned-up Meredith and the more bohemian Stones gets even more complicated, however, when Meredith invites her sister Julie (Clare Danes) to join as emotional support.

Bezucha told CNN that he wouldn't move forward with The Family Stone 2 unless the main cast of the original film — save for Keaton, sadly — were to return: "I'm not interested in the Brady family reunion without the original Jan," the writer-director told the outlet.
That means, if Bezucha gets his way, O.G. cast members including Parker, Mulroney, Adams, Danes, Wilson, Nelson, Tyrone Giordano (who played younger Stone bro Thad) and Elizabeth Reaser (as sister Susannah) will all be reprising their roles for the sequel. However, contracts aren't signed just yet.
