Chris Sullivan revealed how he and his wife of 15 years set themselves up for mutually rewarding Valentine's Day dates

Chris Sullivan is sharing his secret to keeping romance alive.
Speaking with PEOPLE in an exclusive conversation at the New York City premiere of his latest project, sci-fi film Mercy, on Jan. 20, the 45-year-old actor revealed how he and his wife of 15 years, Rachel Sullivan, set themselves up for mutually rewarding Valentine's Day dates every year.
"When you have a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old, just getting out of the house for 25 minutes is the perfect date," the father of two and This Is Us alum quipped. He then added, "Going for a walk, whatever it takes. It reminds me that, uh, we need to get something on the books for Valentine's Day and get out of our routine of keeping these children alive."

The Stranger Things alum then explained what makes an ideal Valentine's Day date, saying, "It all depends on what you both need. What do you need most? Focus on that."
That sentiment is similar to what Chris told PEOPLE in 2018 about love.
"Romance means making yourself vulnerable. Ask your partner what they need to feel loved and when they tell you, say, 'I can do that!' Love is an action verb, and romance is the result of those actions," he said at the time.
At the Mercy premiere event, Chris also shared his love language.
"Mine? I like to receive words of affirmation and grounding touch," the actor revealed, adding that his wife's are "acts of service and quality time."
For her part, Rachel routinely showers her husband with words of affirmation in anniversary and birthday posts on Instagram.

"Life with you @sullivangrams is the greatest adventure," Rachel wrote in a post for their 14th anniversary in 2024. "I'm so grateful to have you as my partner in every way. Two beautiful children, two pups, a happy peaceful home, careers we are passionate about, this is all I could hope for."
Rachel continued, "I love you and I love the life we have created."
