After tying the knot in November 1999, TV producer Bill Lawrence and actress Christa Miller have maintained both a thriving marriage and collaborative professional relationship. In addition to sharing three grown kids — Henry, Charlotte and William — the couple has also worked on Cougar Town, Scrubs as well as Shrinking, which returned to Apple TV+ with season 3, during their nearly 30 years of marriage.

While Miller, 61, tells PEOPLE that "it's so perfect that we can have a working relationship," she says that the key to their marriage is that "we make each other laugh."

"We have the same sense of humor," she continues, explaining with a laugh that there's a dichotomy to their dynamic both at work and at home. "I think how it works is he's so dumb at home. Like, the other night, he called me and he said, 'It's so hot in here.' I was like, 'You don't know how to turn the air conditioning on?' Like, I don't even understand him. And at work, he's so smart and he's so dynamic and charismatic."

"I think that's what makes our marriage work," Miller adds, while also acknowledging that her husband's in the middle of a career renaissance, thanks to the ongoing success of Ted Lasso and Shrinking, as well as the return of Scrubs with season 10 after 16 years off the air. "Bill's kind of really having a great time in his career and he's in a flow, man. He's just doing it all."

In response, Lawrence, 57, tells PEOPLE that his wife "is the funniest chick on the planet and just gives me the giggles."

"I'm very lucky — you know, it's corny to say if someone's your muse but I sometimes start shows with trying to figure out the voices of the characters and who they're based on," he continues, explaining, "To have my wife's comedic voice in my head — especially on Shrinking because she gets to do so much stuff as a dramatic actress that I knew she should do but didn't necessarily always get the shot to do on shows that had nothing to do with me — it's a gift."

Lawrence is the creator of Scrubs, which costarred Miller as Jordan Sullivan during the medical comedy's first nine seasons, and co-creator of Clone High, with Miller voicing characters on the animated teen comedy; Cougar Town, featuring the actress as Courteney Cox's friend and neighbor; and Shrinking, which also stars Miller as Liz, a neighbor of Jimmy's (Jason Segel) who helps with looking after his daughter. The actress has also served as a music supervisor for Scrubs, Shrinking and Ted Lasso, which returns with season 4 this summer.

Lawrence's other Apple TV+ show, Bad Monkey, costars their daughter, Charlotte. Considering that so many of his projects have been family affairs, the showrunner says, "If you are able, in any job, you should work with your friends and family. I feel like if you don't do it, you're a crazy person."

"I'm the exact opposite of some people that think that they should keep that stuff separate because Christa surprises me every day on set," Lawrence continues, beaming over the reactions to her performance on season 3 of Shrinking. "How she's been received this year, I couldn't be happier for her. But I'm also not surprised because she killed it."
