Lily Allen and her family are going through some changes.

According to NME, at a live show of her podcast Miss Me? the singer, 40, spoke about returning to the U.K. with her two daughters, Ethel, 14, and Marnie, 12, after spending a few years in the United States. At the event, Allen said it's been "a lot" for her kids after she split from her ex-husband David Harbour.

"My kids are f------ mental at the moment," said Allen. "They are really developing their personalities. It's just a lot. There's a lot of questions."

"There's a lot of change in our lives at the moment," she continued. "We've changed houses, we've changed countries, we've changed schools, and it's a lot."

Allen explained that her daughters are "discovering who they are" while "grappling with some new ideas in terms of who I am."

"The last five years, I've been a stay-at-home mum," the "West End Girl" singer explained. "And now I'm a single mum that has to work and suddenly has a lot of work opportunities on my plate and I'm having to travel a lot."

However, Allen said her daughters understand the situation to some extent since they appreciate having nice things.

"But they also like having a nice roof over their heads and nice clothes and being able to go to nice restaurants and things," she added. "So they understand it. But it's just a lot of change. There's a lot of change and also new friends, new friendship grounds and the idea of boyfriends."

Allen shares her daughters with ex Sam Cooper. In February, multiple sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Harbour and Allen separated after four years of marriage. The former couple — who were first linked in 2019 — tied the knot during a Las Vegas wedding in September 2020.

After the split, a source told PEOPLE that Allen was "devastated and not in a good place" and the split from Harbour has "been very hard for her and her girls."

Back in October, Allen spoke with British Vogue and discussed why she finds it important to be candid with her daughters about the struggles of motherhood. At the time, Allen said she hopes that by being honest with her girls, it will help them not make the same mistakes.

"I try not to smother them. I feel like I can try and shield them and protect them from things, but I don't think that really works," said Allen. "A big part of what I'm doing at the moment creatively is for them. I need to show them that, yeah, we've been through something f------ devastating – twice now – and that I can get us through."

She explained that her daughters have seen her in the "depths of despair" this last year. After listening to her music, Allen said they're now proud of her.

"I feel like I often talk on the podcast about how f------ hard it is to be a mum," said Allen. "And people come to me and say, 'Imagine your children reading this.'"

"And it's like, yes, I want them to know that so that they don't do the same thing! You know? I felt totally gaslit by my mum about motherhood," she continued, adding that her mother would tell her that everything is fine.
