It's no longer a whisper; the NBA has a brazen and embarrassing tanking problem.

The Utah Jazz closed the third quarter Monday, Feb. 9 against the Miami Heat up by three. They had been dominating Miami in the paint on both ends. Their size was the big reason why.

Forward Jaren Jackson Jr., the prized acquisition Utah made just one week prior, was at 22 points through 25 minutes. Star forward Lauri Markkanen added 17 in 24:38. Veteran center Jusuf Nurkić was a problem all night to the tune of 10 points and 16 rebounds.

Yet, with a victory in sight, Jazz coach Will Hardy took self-sabotage and shameless tanking to a new level, sitting the trio for the entire fourth quarter.

In a twist of karmic justice, Miami was so poor down the stretch that the Jazz somehow overcame a late five-point deficit to win, 115-111.

This was the second consecutive game that Hardy had pulled the stunt. Even worse: it appears this will be Utah's standard operating procedure moving forward.

After the game, a reporter asked Hardy how close he was to subbing Jackson or Markkanen back in.

"I wasn't," Hardy responded, plainly and without elaboration.

This is an existential problem, one NBA commissioner Adam Silver and the Board of Governors must fix. Yes, the draft is expected to feature at least three elite-level players, but if the NBA doesn't take prompt action, anti-competitive behavior will spread to other teams also looking to manipulate outcomes.

It's out in the open now, and this will come to stain the last quarter of the season. The product will suffer. And fans, as they should, will flee. As such, the NBA is compromised.

And with the explosive growth of online sports gambling and prediction markets, these actions only invite further cracks in the integrity and competitive balance of the sport.

The NBA's player participation policy is designed to foil tanks by mandating that teams play their stars with regularity. But the Jazz have found a workaround to the rule. Their impact players start games, they just don't finish them. And thus, they make a mockery of the policy.

"We've got to find a way to win against teams that are, I guess you can say, trying to lose," Heat center Bam Adebayo told reporters after the game.

Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy watches from the sideline during his team's game against the Miami Heat at Kaseya Center on Feb. 9, 2026.

Frankly, though Hardy will never admit this publicly, the directive to tank is almost certainly coming from his bosses.

Utah's 2026 first-round pick is top-eight protected, which means that if the lottery places its selection anywhere from Nos. 1 through 8, the pick stays with the team. If it drops to No. 9 or below, that pick is conveyed to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

And while it makes total economic sense — the good fortune of drafting a franchise-altering player instantly pumps millions in value — the flagrant tanking debases the sport and insults the fan who invests time and capital.

Utah (17-37) isn't alone. The Washington Wizards (14-38) traded for a pair of veterans, Anthony Davis and Trae Young, who have 14 combined All-Star appearances. They were curious win-now moves for a team that's currently second-to-last in the East.

Davis and Young were both hurt when they were acquired, and it's unclear when they'll make their return — if they do at all.

A recent NBA TV report indicated that Davis was not expected to return the rest of the season with left hand and groin injuries.

Young has been dealing with a sprained knee. The timeline for both is nebulous, at best.

Wizards general manager Will Dawkins recently responded to the report and said Davis would return to Dallas to finish his rehab and that he would be reevaluated over the NBA All-Star break.

Davis' original timeline for a return was four-to-six weeks; Dawkins, though, put it closer to 10.

The Wizards, similar to Utah, have also cycled through young lineups, particularly when facing some of the NBA's weaker teams.

And also like Utah, Washington's 2026 first-round pick is top-eight protected.

The Indiana Pacers (13-40) traded for Ivica Zubac, who was away from the Clippers, his former team, for the birth of his first child. Zubac had played in the previous nine games before the trade. Yet, Pacers coach Rick Carlisle said Zubac's debut with Indiana would be delayed because of a sprained ankle that hadn't been listed on prior injury reports.

Indiana's 2026 first-round pick? If you guessed that it was protected, you would be correct, for Nos. 1-4 and 10-30.

The young Brooklyn Nets (15-37) waived Cam Thomas after they couldn't find a trade partner. They, too, appear to be in tank mode.

The Milwaukee Bucks (21-30) might convince Giannis Antetokounmpo to take his time from his calf strain to preserve their draft positioning.

Same for the Dallas Mavericks (19-33) with Kyrie Irving and his torn anterior cruciate ligament.

The Sacramento Kings (12-43) are simply without direction.

The tanking feels like it will get worse. And while the temptation might be to say it's harmless jockeying, the flip side is that it impacts seeding for the teams actually competing and vying for spots in the playoffs.

In some ways, the timing of the All-Star break is convenient; it provides a respite for Silver and league executives to brainstorm ways to eradicate this from the league.

If they don't come out strong with precise and targeted measures, then why even play the games? And, if you're a fan, why even watch?

It was tense.

Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Zach Braziller about the inside buzz on St. John's.

It was close.

It could've gone either way.

The second matchup between the Pitinos was much like the first one — a narrow St. John's victory that could have easily been won by Xavier.

Ultimately, the 17th-ranked Johnnies made enough plays Monday to survive, three days after their rousing victory over Connecticut.

"We were ready to play, but [Xavier] was terrific, and they were terrific at Xavier. Certain teams cause matchup problems for you, and this team does for us," coach Rick Pitino said after the Red Storm's grind-it-out, 87-82 overtime victory in front of 14,512 at the Garden. "But we came away twice in the latter stages of the games with a victory. I think that's a great thing for our team. I hope we don't play them in the Big East Tournament."

Bryce Hopkins of the St. John's Red Storm slams the ball during the first half against Xavier. Robert Sabo for NY Post

Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins came up big in overtime, after Oziyah Sellers shook off a poor shooting night by tipping in his own miss late in the regulation to force the extra session.

In those final five minutes, Ejiofor scored six of his game-high 25 points, Hopkins came up with two key steals and St. John's (19-5, 12-1) defense made critical stops and held Xavier (12-12, 4-9) star Tre Carroll without a field-goal attempt.

"That's what we said, he's not going to touch it, we're going to make their guards handle the basketball and take shots," Pitino said.

The elder Pitino improved to 5-1 against his son, Richard, and moved into third place on his own on the all-time wins list, surpassing Roy Williams.

It marked St. John's 10th consecutive win and moved them into a flat-footed tie atop the Big East with sixth-ranked UConn.

But the Hall of Fame coach wasn't thrilled with the performance.

Rick Pitino reacts from the sideline during the St. John's win against Xavier on Feb. 9. Robert Sabo for the NY Post

"Because I was not pleased with our defense tonight, I'm not really happy about 904. If we played better defense, I'd be much happier," he said. "Happy with the victory, but more proud of my son. In the two times we played them, he did things to really hurt our defense, did things to really hurt our press."

Xavier had St. John's on skates defensively for large portions of the evening.

They led by five deep into the second half, and were a defensive rebound away in the final seconds from pulling off the upset as a 16.5-point underdog.

CHECK OUT THE LATEST BIG EAST STANDINGS AND ST. JOHN'S STATS

But Hopkins got two key offensive rebounds with St. John's down two, Sellers got to his own miss to pull the Johnnies even and Carroll slipped and his heave at the horn wasn't close.

In overtime, Hopkins was terrific on the defensive end.

"When the game was on the line, really Bryce Hopkins won the game," Pitino said. "He made big plays for us on the defensive end, and he was outstanding in the final seven, eight minutes of the game."

Ejiofor had seven rebounds and five assists to go with his 25 points, Hopkins added 19 points and nine rebounds and Dylan Darling had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists off the bench.

Carroll scored 21 for Xavier and Jovan Milicevic tallied 13.

Predictably, the atmosphere three days after the rousing Connecticut win was not nearly the same.

The crowd, decent in size, was quiet and the team wasn't sharp.

"It might've looked like we came out lacking a little bit of energy. But it wasn't like we were taking Xavier lightly," Darling said. "They took us down to the buzzer at their place, and we just went to OT with them tonight. We weren't taking them lightly. … We struggled, and we struggled guarding them."

David Njoku is taking his talents elsewhere.

The longtime Browns tight end is not returning to Cleveland after spending the first nine years of his career with the organization, he revealed in an Instagram post Monday night.

"Cleveland, first off I love you. These 9 years have been a beautiful journey," he wrote in the post. "I'm am so grateful for all the memories we shared together. Thank you to The Haslams, Andrew Berry and the whole browns organization for everything!! All my teammates I shared the battle with I'm so grateful for you guys. The time for me to find a new home has come and all I can think of is just the gratefulness in my heart. The city of Cleveland will forever be home."

He ended the message with a heart emoji and the hashtag, "ChiefOut.

Njoku was taken with the No. 29 overall pick by the Browns in 2017 and has gone on to make significant contributions to the franchise since his arrival.

He will depart Cleveland ranked second among tight ends in franchise history in touchdown catches with 34 and receptions with 384.

Rumors had started to swirl about Njoku before the NFL trade deadline in November, but he did not end up getting moved.

The Browns are expected to look very different next season with new head coach Todd Monken at the helm, which is something general manager Andrew Berry implied, saying the offense will see "significant turnover."

Njoku dealt with injury issues during his final two seasons in Cleveland, missing a combined 11 games over that time.

He finished last season with only 33 catches for 293 yards and four touchdowns, which were the fewest catches and receiving yards he's had since the 2020 season.

In his nine years with the Browns, Njoku earned Pro Bowl honors in 2023.

The late-night reviews are in for Turning Point USA's alternative halftime show.

Jimmy Kimmel and Jon Stewart both had a field day on their Feb. 9 shows mocking the conservative organization's All-American Halftime Show, which was streamed on YouTube during the Super Bowl to compete with the official version headlined by Bad Bunny. The show was meant to appeal to Super Bowl viewers who were unhappy that Bad Bunny was performing in Spanish on the main broadcast, and it was initially set to also stream on X before running into licensing restriction issues there.

On "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," Kimmel described the All-American Halftime Show as a "disaster" that was put together for "angry, 75-year-old grandpas" because "all the snowflakes were so upset they might have to listen to Spanish for eight minutes."

Kimmel also mocked Kid Rock's performance as a "lip-sync battle with himself," observing, "Kid's lips were not exactly in step with Kid's music." The musician has acknowledged there was a "syncing issue" with his performance.

Turning Point Halftime Show set to go head to head with Bad Bunny

"This is what they do: They complain about how bad everything is, and then they do it worse," Kimmel said after playing a clip of Kid Rock performing. He went on to add, "Almost all of the complaints about Bad Bunny were, 'You can't understand what he's saying.' So who do they go to? Kid Rock, an artist whose most popular song is literally gibberish. You think Donald Trump knows what 'Bawitdaba' means?"

At the same time, Kimmel bemoaned the fact that "we have to take a side" between Kid Rock and Bad Bunny, joking that some of his liberal friends may be exaggerating their love for the latter. "This week, almost every liberal I know, suddenly really into Bad Bunny," he said. "People I've never heard say the words 'bad' or 'bunny' in their lives," he quipped.

Oliver refuted that report. Here, Oliver is pictured in at the 77th Primetime Emmy Awards on Sept. 14, 2025, in Los Angeles.

Comedian Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!", will resume production after it was pulled off the air Sept. 17, following comments he made in the wake of Charlie Kirk's killing. Kimmel, a frequent critic of Donald Trump, often earned the ire of the president. After the announcement, Trump urged other networks to do the same. Meanwhile, on "The Daily Show," Stewart sarcastically praised Turning Point for putting on a halftime show "in the King's English," before mocking Kid Rock as "an old man in acid-washed jorts badly [lip-syncing] his way through a pre-taped 'Bawitdaba' performance."

Stewart later said it's "pathetic" the way "these people, who control every branch of government, are so triggered by someone singing in Spanish for 20 minutes, they need to create their own safe space alternative halftime show." He pointed to this as an example of how those on the right are behaving like they used to accuse liberals of acting.

"Remember 2017? Remember what you hated about liberals?" he asked. "'Perpetually offended, safe spaces, censoring free speech, culture of victimhood.' Remind you of anyone? 'I can't go 15 minutes without listening to country music. I need a separate show!'"

The hard-hitting statement from the palace about the former Prince Andrew marks a "seminal shift" in thinking, a royal author says

King Charles, Prince William and Kate Middleton made statements on Feb. 9 supporting the "victims" of Jeffrey Epstein

The latest allegations suggest Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor may have shared confidential information with the late sex offender, a claim that police are assessing

A mood shift appears to be underway regarding the British royal family and the former Prince Andrew.

Breaking their silence on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor's ties to Jeffrey Epstein since the Department of Justice released the latest related files, Buckingham Palace released a statement on Feb. 9 that they won't stand in the way of the police if they have questions for King Charles' brother.

Russell Myers, author of the upcoming William and Catherine: The Monarchy's New Era: The Inside Story, tells PEOPLE, "Certainly, there is an appetite at both Buckingham Palace and Kensington Palace for Andrew to do the right thing by his conscience and speak to U.S. investigators if he has any information."

In the wake of news that the Thames Valley Police is investigating a complaint alleging that Andrew shared confidential information related to his role as a trade envoy with Jeffrey Epstein, a spokesperson for the monarch said, "The King has made clear, in words and through unprecedented actions, his profound concern at allegations which continue to come to light in respect of Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor's conduct."

"While the specific claims in question are for Mr. Mountbatten-Windsor to address, if we are approached by Thames Valley Police, we stand ready to support them as you would expect," the palace spokesperson added.

Myers tells PEOPLE, "Buckingham Palace announcing that they stand ready to assist the police in any investigation is a seminal moment for the royal family. By referring to the former Duke of York as Mr. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor in public and expressing that he is purely a private citizen is a clear indication that Andrew is on his own and will no longer be protected by the royal family, by the institution."

He adds, "This course of action should have been taken many years ago."

The words from Buckingham Palace came just hours after the first statement since the release of the Epstein files from Kate Middleton and Prince William. In it, they showed their support for the victims of Epstein. "I can confirm the Prince and Princess have been deeply concerned by the continuing revelations. Their thoughts remain focused on the victims," a spokesperson told PEOPLE.

Myers is with Prince William in Saudi Arabia, where the royal is spending three days on an official tour on behalf of the U.K. government.

"In Saudi Arabia, William was as professional as ever. But there is a deep feeling that the latest revelations in the Epstein scandal have the capacity to overshadow what they are trying to achieve," Myers says.

"It's an important step for both William and Catherine to not only convey their personal feelings on the allegations but also publicly state that they stand with the victims."

Myers, whose book is published in March, says that the couple "have found the disturbing claims in the Epstein files profoundly concerning, and they wanted to let it be known that they stand with the victims at the center of this."

After Andrew stepped back from his royal duties in 2019, the late Queen Elizabeth stripped her second son of his military titles and patronages in January 2022, after a judge rejected his attempt to have Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre's sexual assault lawsuit against him dismissed. Andrew has repeatedly denied Giuffre's allegations and reached a settlement with her in 2022.

King Charles removed all of Andrew's royal titles and honors in October 2025 and ordered him to surrender the lease on his home, Royal Lodge. The former prince moved out of the 30-room residence last week and is now living on the royal family's private estate at Sandringham, Norfolk.

Myers, who is royal editor of the Daily Mirror, adds of the latest revelations, including that convicted sex offender Epstein spent time as a guest at royal residences, "Epstein was allowed to enter the heart of the institution. And while the King and the Prince and Princess of Wales may have had no idea about the actual closeness of Andrew and Epstein's relationship, it now affects them and their futures."

"This week, William has had one of the most diplomatically sensitive missions of his public life, where his role as a member of the monarchy and being in Saudi Arabia at the request of the British government, but it threatens to be overshadowed by this. It's stopping them from doing their jobs."

Marc Anthony has broken his silence on the Beckham family feud after his name came up amid the drama.

The 57-year-old singer is a close friend of the Beckham family, and Brooklyn named him in his brutal statement attacking his parents — David and Victoria — when referencing his 2022 wedding to Nicola Peltz.

Anthony called the Beckham family feud "unfortunate."

"They're a wonderful, wonderful family," Anthony told the Hollywood Reporter in an interview published Monday. "I've known them since before the kids were born. I'm godfather to Cruz. I'm really close to the family."

The singer was dragged into the Beckham family drama after Brooklyn claimed his mom, Victoria, "hijacked" his first dance with his wife, Nicola Peltz, which was set to be performed by Anthony. Instagram/ Nicola Peltz Beckham

"But I have nothing to say about what happened there. It's extremely unfortunate how it's playing out — but [how it's playing out] is hardly the truth," he added.

In Brooklyn's shocking public statement he shared via Instagram Stories in January, he claimed his mom "hijacked" his first dance with Peltz at their wedding reception and then "danced very inappropriately" on him, leaving him "uncomfortable" and "humiliated."

"In front of our 500 wedding guests, Marc Anthony called me to the stage, where in the schedule was planned to be my romantic dance with my wife but instead my mum was waiting to dance with me instead," Brooklyn wrote.

A source later told Page Six that the moment in question was not the couple's very first dance, but happened after they, their family and other guests had already been dancing for a while — when Anthony took the stage to perform.

The Grammy-winning singer was apparently supposed to introduce Brooklyn, 26, and Peltz, 31, who would then dance on a specially built stage.

"It was meant to be the big romantic first dance," a second wedding insider told us. "It was pre-determined specifically for Nicola and Brooklyn."

Instead, Anthony called Brooklyn up to dance with "the most beautiful woman in the room" — not the new bride, but Victoria.

The first guest told Page Six that Victoria "got up on stage and wrapped her arms around Brooklyn" and "nuzzled into his neck."

In Brooklyn's scathing public attack on his parents, he claimed they repeatedly tried to ruin his marriage to Peltz and noted that he didn't want to reconcile with them. victoriabeckham/Instagram

"She was dancing with him very inappropriately. She took that moment from Nicola, that is the God's truth."

The guest added, "Nicola ran out crying. The Beckhams' side of the room was cheering and the Peltz side was quiet."

In Brooklyn's statement, he noted that he did not want to reconcile with his family.

Since then, his siblings — Romeo, 23, Cruz, 20, and Harper, 14 — have put on a united front supporting their parents.

Romeo unveiled his new tattoo on the back of his neck reading "family" on Sunday, a pointed choice after Brooklyn's decision to cover up his right arm tattoo dedicated to his dad as well as the ink on his fingers once dedicated to his siblings.
