As a cat owner, there’s no denying how much you care about your furbaby. After all, to you, they are more than just an animal that lives in your house. They are your family and companion. However, even though as a cat mom or dad, you’re showing them constant affection through cuddling them and talking to them with gentle words, it can be hard to know if your kitty understands them and it can be even harder to know if they feel the same way about you.

So while you cat may be sharing signs they love you, you might not even know it. That’s why pet experts like Jo Myers, DVM, a veterinary advisor at Vetster, say it’s important to know how to decode your cat’s body language and behaviors. After all, cats communicate differently than people do. That way you can see what they are trying to tell you and you can learn how to speak their language to express how you feel to them. By doing so, neither of you will miss the signs.

“Getting to know their individual personality and developing your own ways of communicating is part of the joy of living with them,” Myers says.

So, if you’re curious how cats show emotions without words so you know what signs to look out for, or if you want to know how you can say “I love you” to you cat, see what Myers suggests below. By doing so, you’ll see that your cat is more attached to you than you realized and your bond with grow.

According to a vet, there are a few different ways indoor cats typically show affection. So even though cats can be said to be standoffish, you can know how they feel about you if you look out for a few clues. One has to do with how they view your bond and connection.

“Cats commonly initiate contact with people they have positive relationships with,” Myers says.

She notes that signs from your cat can include approaching you, rubbing their head or body against you, resting or sleeping nearby, sitting on your lap, grooming or licking you, playing or following you around.

#1 Way Cats Say “I Love You”

If you’ve always wondered, “How do cats say ‘I love you’?’ or “How do I know if my cat loves me?” you’re not alone. Most cat parents think about the same thing. The good news is, Myers says there is one common cat behavior that you can look out for.

It’s slow blinking. What is slow blinking exactly? This is a form of body language that signals affection and caring about someone. This is when your cat makes eye contact and slowly closes and opens their eyes in your direction. “It has also been linked with positive human-cat interactions,” Myers reveals.

Myers says another common ways cats can let you know that you are their favorite person is when a cat that voluntarily approaches you and wants to spend time with you as that signals affection as well.

“So, if you’ve always considered your cat’s slow blink as their way of saying ‘I love you,’ there’s no reason you can’t continue enjoying it that way,” Myers says.
