TRAVERSE CITY — An 18-year-old has been charged with second-degree murder and operating while intoxicated causing death after a crash that killed another teen.
The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office said in an Oct. 23 statement that Jackson Matthew Lakies of Traverse City was driving a 2016 BMW on Center Road in Peninsula Township about 7:49 a.m. on Oct. 3 when his vehicle left the road at a high rate of speed and struck a tree.
His passenger, Jason Douglas Soloman, 17, was killed in the crash.
Prosecutors said data was recovered from the BMW and that it was traveling “approximately 129 miles per hour just five seconds before the crash” and before approaching a sharp turn in the road. The BMW left the road and no braking of the vehicle was detected until about half a second before the vehicle struck a tree.
Lakies was arrested on Oct. 23, prosecutors said. He faces up to life in prison for the second-degree murder charge, and up to 15 years in prison for the operating while intoxicated charged.
The prosecutor's office said arraignment in 86th District Court was pending for Lakies, at which time bond would be set.
"The Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office extends its condolences to the family, friends, and classmates of Jason Soloman," the office said in its statement.
