Surprise! Savannah Guthrie ditched her whiteboard and debuted her new post-vocal surgery voice on Tuesday, Jan. 20, during a video appearance on the Today show.
After beginning the Morning Boost segment by writing on the white board, Guthrie, 54, then teased, "You know what, I think it'd be easier for me to just talk!" as her co-workers cheered with excitement.
The longtime journalist explained that her recovery hasn't ended just yet, though it has shifted after two weeks of absolute silence.
"I am still on vocal rest, but I'm allowed to talk for five to 10 minutes every hour," she shared. "This is my new voice or my old voice, but my new voice."
Al Roker told Guthrie that she "sounds the same," while Craig Melvin disagreed, noting, "No, it sounds, you sound markedly better!"

"I think the good news is that it worked!" Guthrie shared. "And Sheinelle [Jones] knows, she went through this and had this surgery, it's kind of slow recovery. You're allowed to talk and if you talk too much — which is a real risk for me — you start to feel it, so you just have to take it easy."
Carson Daly wanted to know if Guthrie had "given it a good test ride" by yelling at her two kids, daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9, whom she shares with husband Mike Feldman.
"Actually, yes, a long weekend will bring that out, you know, especially Mike had to travel, it finally got there," Guthrie quipped.

After her extended absence from the show since mid-December, Guthrie also shared details on her official return to the NBC morning show.
"I'm gonna come back to the show, I think, next Monday, but Friday I'm going to come and we're gonna do a little story about just what this whole thing has been like and the surgery," she explained.

Guthrie first announced in December that she was getting vocal surgery to combat the nodules and polyps in her vocal cords.
Guthrie joked at the time that some viewers might think she had "the world's longest head cold," but instead she's "really excited" to have finally diagnosed the problem and found a fix.
"This has been going on for years, honestly, so to have a solution," Guthrie shared.
