The Old Guard actor was sentenced to six months in prison, a 4,000 euro fine, and a one-year driving ban in Beringen, Belgium, according to Belga News Agency.
Representatives for Schoenaerts did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly's request for comment.
According to Belga, Schoenaerts was previously banned from driving in January 2023 following a conviction for a September 2021 offense, which meant he did not have a valid license when he was pulled over on a motorbike on April 6, 2024 and again on April 21, 2024. He was convicted of driving without a valid license for those two instances, and was also convicted of driving without valid insurance on April 5.

However, court spokesperson Luc De Cleir told Belga that Schoenaerts is unlikely to actually spend any time behind bars, and he will have the opportunity to appeal the ruling.
If Schoenaerts does serve his sentence in the near future, the timing of his imprisonment could affect his ability to promote his next project: DC Studios' Supergirl, which is currently scheduled to release in theaters on June 26, 2026.
Belga noted that Schoenaerts has faced 11 prior convictions, and that he was recently detained by authorities in Pelt on Nov. 21 after allegedly driving without a license and refusing a breath test.
The son of Flemish actor Julien Schoenaerts, Matthias Schoenaerts made his screen debut opposite his father in 1992's Daens. After appearing in a number Belgian projects throughout the 2000s, Schoenaerts received widespread acclaim for his turn in Jacques Audiard's 2012 French-language romance film Rust and Bones alongside Marion Cotillard.
Schoenaerts then appeared in a number of English-language films throughout the 2010s, including Francis Lawrence's Red Sparrow (starring Jennifer Lawrence), Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl (starring Eddie Redmayne), Luca Guadagnino's A Bigger Splash (starring Tilda Swinton and Ralph Fiennes), Thomas Vinterberg's Far From the Madding Crowd (starring Carey Mulligan), and Terrence Malick's A Hidden Life.

Supergirl is not Schoenaerts' only upcoming project. The actor is also set to star in the French drama Changer l'eau des fleurs from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Amélie), and will reunite with Malick for his Jesus epic The Way of the Wind, which began filming in 2019.
