Conan O'Brien doesn't even have a late-night show anymore, but he can't escape Paul Rudd's "Mac and Me" prank.
On the latest episode of O'Brien's "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" podcast, released Dec. 29, Rudd continued a running joke that he has kept going for more than 20 years. Since 2004, the gag has always involved Rudd coming on O'Brien's show and setting up a clip from his new project, only to instead show the exact same, bizarre scene from the 1988 film "Mac and Me."
This time, Rudd was on O'Brien's podcast to promote "Anaconda," his new comedy with Jack Black about friends who set out to remake the original "Anaconda" movie. Rudd claimed to O'Brien that he brought a clip from the film in which his character talks about obtaining the "Anaconda" rights. But as usual, the "Mac and Me" clip played instead.
On Conan O'Brien's podcast, Paul Rudd brought back a running gag he has kept going for more than 20 years.
O'Brien immediately shook his head and laughed as the scene came on for the upteenth time.
"Here's my question for you: Is there a part of you that just hates yourself when you're doing the fake setup now?" O'Brien jokingly asked Rudd, noting that the "minute you start to say 'I have a clip,'" "we all know" where he's going with it.
Ahead of the final 'Conan' episode, Paul Rudd pranks Conan O'Brien one last time
"Absolutely. Hate it when I'm setting it up, hate it when I'm sitting watching," Rudd quipped, also admitting he doesn't "even try" to actually trick O'Brien anymore. "I'll be honest, I put very little thought into how I was going to do it this time," he joked.
O'Brien also imagined a scenario where, in the future, he and Rudd are old men and Rudd visits him in the hospital, where he shows him the "Mac and Me" clip instead of a medical scan.
Rudd's "Mac and Me" prank dates back to February 2004, when he appeared on "Late Night with Conan O'Brien" and discussed the then-upcoming series finale of "Friends." At the time, Rudd showed the "Mac and Me" scene, in which a young boy in a wheelchair rolls down a hill and into the water, after claiming he brought a clip from the highly anticipated episode.

In the years since, Rudd repeatedly executed the same bait-and-switch gag on O'Brien's show while promoting "The 40-Year-Old Virgin," "Role Models" and more.

In 2015, he switched up the formula for "Ant-Man" by claiming Marvel wouldn't let him pull the stunt again. So he showed a real clip from the superhero movie, only for it to transition into a version of the "Mac and Me" clip with Ant-Man inserted into the scene. O'Brien then said he would be showing the real, unaltered "Ant-Man" clip, but the "Mac and Me" one simply played a second time.
In 2021, Rudd brought the bit back during the final week of O'Brien's late-night show, which ended that year. For the grand finale, he crashed O'Brien's interview with Bill Hader while Hader was discussing an old "Saturday Night Live" sketch with Rudd that didn't work. Rudd claimed he had a clip of the sketch in question, leading into "Mac and Me."
But even after "Conan" ended, the running joke continued, with Rudd later bringing it back on O'Brien's podcast. O'Brien seemed legitimately surprised that time, telling Rudd, "I didn't see it coming. You can't do that on a podcast! It's a visual joke!"

It's the most wonderful time of the year: The start of awards season! The month of December kicked off on a star-studded note with the Gotham Awards, the first major awards ceremony of Oscar season. While appearing on "Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend" in 2019, Rudd explained the gag came about originally because it feels "kind of insincere" to have to sell his new movies, so he thought it would be funny to show a clip from something else instead.
"What's amazing about it is it's this performance art joke that takes place over two decades and means nothing," O'Brien said. "That's also what I love is that there's no point behind it."
But after the latest prank on the Dec. 29 podcast, O'Brien cryptically teased he has an idea to take the gag to the next level.
"I did think of a scenario where we could do this – and I don't want to reveal it here – I did think of a scenario which would be momentous, and I'm hoping we get to do it someday," he said. "There is a way to do this that would be the greatest, but I will figure that out."
