ANNA Wintour admitted she broke her cardinal rule when it came to the Met Gala and apologized for causing confusion.
The Vogue editor-in-chief, 74, admitted people struggled to interpret the Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion theme and its dress code, the Garden of Time, at Monday's event.
The Met Gala theme was met with confusion when it was announced in November.
Fans predicted that celebrities would wear pajamas on the red carpet for the "sleeping" aspect of the theme, or princess-style gowns in a nod to the Disney film Sleeping Beauty.
Anna admitted that neither was correct in a chat with Jenna Bush Hager on Today that aired on Monday before the gala.
"This exhibition broke my cardinal rule," she said.
"When we came up with the title Sleeping Beauties, it's wonderful and poetic and romantic, but actually, it could be many, many things."
The editor collaborated with Andrew Bolton, the curator of the Costume Institute, when establishing the dress code.
"I said, 'What are we gonna say to people to wear to this night?' And he said, 'Well, what about 'Garden of Time?'" she recalled.
"So, I fear that we've unleashed a lot of confusion out there, and for which I deeply apologize."
Anna shared how she believed people would interpret the theme, saying, "I imagine we'll see a lot of flowers."
Andrew previously explained that the entire exhibit is focused on 50 historical garments that are so fragile they can never be worn again – the "sleeping beauties."
<!-- End of Brightcove Player --> The inspiration was an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth silk ball gown, and each piece was reimagined and displayed in glass cases.
"The idea of Sleeping Beauties is taking these masterpieces from different periods, and because so many of them are very fragile, they are laid flat behind glass walls," Anna said.
Guests were encouraged to embrace fleeting beauty with the dress code and could interpret the theme more literally by wearing florals to represent a garden.

She was joined this year by co-chairs Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya, and Bad Bunny at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
TikTok's CEO Shou Chew and Jonathan Anderson, creative director of Loewe, were also at the event.
MAKING HISTORY
Zendaya turned heads by making an outfit change and walking down the red carpet for a second time – something that has never been done before.
After being one of the first celebrities to walk the carpet earlier Monday night, Zendaya returned at the end, in a brand new outfit.
The 27-year-old Challengers actress first wore a custom Margiela by Galliano gown, inspired by a Christian Dior haute couture piece from the spring of 1999.
She teamed the navy and metallic green one-shoulder dress with a black headpiece and gothic makeup.
The Euphoria star then changed into a dramatic black Galliano gown from the designer's first haute-couture collection for Givenchy in January 1996.
She added a floral twist with a headpiece made from a huge bouquet of colorful roses.
Other stars also went for floral outfits, like Sydney Sweeney, Lizzo, Lana Del Rey, and Demi Moore.
