Queen Elizabeth Trusted This Longtime Employee to Do a “Very Intimate Job” That She “Never” Did on Her Own


Queen Elizabeth reportedly put a “huge amount of trust” in her hairstylist Ian Carmichael, he said.

“I enjoyed being with her and it was always an honor, but I knew my place,” he added.

Carmichael was honored for his services in 2017.

Queen Elizabeth was famously private and deeply devoted to royal protocol. It was rare for people to get close to the queen, and even rarer for them to have an intimate personal relationship with her. However, there was one rather surprising person who reportedly did get close to the queen in order to do an “intimate job”: her hairdresser.

Speaking to woman&home, hairdresser Ian Carmichael opened up about working for the late Queen, who “never” did her own hair. “It was a very intimate job and there probably weren’t many people who could touch her in such a normal way, as you just didn’t touch The Queen,” he said. “I enjoyed being with her and it was always an honor, but I knew my place.”

According to Carmichael, the queen placed a “huge amount of trust” in him to do the job.

Carmichael began working as Elizabeth’s hairdresser in 1998, helping to craft her iconic silver bob. According to the interview, the hairstylist “used to shampoo her hair, then perm it with rollers and set it.”

In 2017, he was awarded in her New Year’s Honours List for his services, which involved visiting her twice a week for hair styling appointments.

Elizabeth died in 2022 at the age of 96 after an historic 70-year reign. The queen reportedly battled bone cancer before her death; however, the famously private monarch chose to keep the diagnosis under wraps from the public during her life.

Former U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson discussed her illness in his 2024 memoir Unleashed. Just two days before her death, he visited the queen. “Edward Young, her private secretary, tried to prepare me,” Johnson wrote. “I had known for a year or more that she had a form of bone cancer, and her doctors were worried that at any time she could enter a sharp decline.”
