Looking for a big cat who wants to be at your side? Ragdolls share the Maine Coon’s affectionate nature, making them a wonderful match for anyone who wants a devoted feline sidekick.
“They’re large and known for being incredibly people-oriented,” Vasudevan explains. However, even though they are similar when it comes to their appearance, there are a couple differences potential pet parents should know as they aren’t as playful and energetic. “Ragdolls tend to be calmer and more relaxed than Maine Coons,” Vasudevan points out.

Think of the Ragamuffin as a cuddly, plush-coated variation of the Maine Coon. These robust, long-haired cats have a gentle personality and love being part of the action at home.
“They have a substantial build and a reputation for being sweet and very people-focused,” Vasudevan explains. In fact, she says these cats have dog-like personalities, just like Maine Coons do. “They generally enjoy being part of whatever their family is doing rather than being completely independent cats.”

Birman

Not every Maine Coon look-alike is a giant fluffball. That’s where Birmans come in. These felines are a smaller cat breed with a distinct appearance, but their gentle, sociable personalities make them a natural fit for families.
“For someone who loves the Maine Coon’s family-friendly temperament, but doesn’t necessarily need the giant size or shaggy appearance, a Birman can be a great alternative,” Vasudevan reveals.
Therefore, if you’re more a fan of their overall personality and not necessarily their big cat build, a Birdman could be just what you’re after.
Breed Stats
Personality: Gentle, social, affectionate
Weight: About 12 pounds
Lifespan: 9–13 years
