Filiberto Reyes and his wife were napping when their 9-year-old husky, Ruso, disappeared from their Compton home on October 4, 2026. The family searched for him, never expecting to find him in another city, Reyes explained in an interview with NBC Los Angeles.

Ruso had grown up alongside the couple’s young son, appearing in family photographs spanning nearly a decade. Reyes remembered a friendly, playful dog who would stand up and try to hug people.

Neighbors alerted the family to images circulating on social media. They showed Ruso hanging by a leash from a metal security door in a Lynwood alley, less than a mile from home.

On October 11, the Animal Hope and Wellness Foundation shared photographs of Reyes and renewed its appeal for information. The organization had spoken with him about Ruso’s disappearance and published his account of events outside the family’s home.

At the Fence

In the account Reyes gave the foundation, a man and woman approached the front-yard fence, and the man kicked Ruso twice before chasing him when he ran off. The foundation identified neighbors as witnesses to that encounter.

Its post also relayed his complaint that police were not cooperating with him and were angry that he was pursuing information himself. The foundation said it had passed additional information to law enforcement and that no arrest had occurred as of its October 11 post.

It urged readers to contact the sheriff’s department’s Century Station and ask what was being done with the information it had provided, listing the station’s phone number and an official contact form.

“Sometimes posting once about something isn’t enough,” the foundation wrote. It described how people become busy and move on, allowing cases to disappear from public view, and said its experience had taught it to keep pressing for answers.

Waiting for Answers

Reyes said the family now feared for its own safety. “I still feel like I’m trapped in a nightmare and I’m just waiting to wake up,” he said.

NBC’s October 13 report identified the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department as investigating the case as suspected animal cruelty. It directed anyone with information to call 310-605-6500, with anonymous tips available through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
