Antonio Banderas Joins Nicolas Cage In ‘True Detective’ Season 5

The next season of True Detective is starting to take shape.

Antonio Banderas has joined the cast of season five of the HBO anthology drama. This comes after Nicolas Cage confirmed that he was entering the universe at last week’s New York Comic-Con, more than a year after it was revealed that the Pig star was in talks.

Production is set to start in 2027 for the show, which is being led by showrunner Issa López, who oversaw season four, Night Country.

There are few details about the season but Cage will star as Henry Logan and Pain and Glory star Banderas will play Rai Garcia. It will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Night Country was set in Alaska and starred Jodie Foster and Kali Reis, season three was set in the Ozarks and starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff, season two was set in California and starred Vince Vaughn, Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams and season one was set in Louisiana and starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson.

López serves as writer, director and showrunner and will exec produce alongside Cage, Banderas, Harrelson, McConaughey, Daniel Zelman, Mari Jo Winkler, Kathleen McCaffrey, Steve Golin, Richard Brown, Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Last year, HBO’s Head of Drama Series Francesca Orsi told Deadline , “Issa has a lot to say, not unlike she did with Night Country. It’s a different milieu but just as powerful.”

López also previously teased that there will be some “important connections” between everything that happened in Alaska and what happens in the new season. “That said, it’s a new story, new characters, everything,” she told the NY Post.

Cage is represented by WME, Stride Management and attorney Patrick Knapp and Banderas is represented by NuCo Media Group and Greenberg Glusker.

Would love to see see Elizabeth Berkley or Heather Locklear in it. We need more comebacks like Pamela Anderson two years ago.
